- About the Author
- OTHER BOOKS BY TRACI HUNTER ABRAMSON
“Raymond Escobar is going by Theo Nalar. From what I can tell, he appears to be working inside the palace.”
“He is.” Panic streaked through him. For the past two weeks, Levi had focused on protecting Cassie and her family from outside threats. How had he, Interpol, and the royal guard all missed that the danger lurking within the palace walls was the king’s personal assistant?
“Apparently, he disappeared after his father passed away. One of our analysts managed to track him to a fishing village in Italy. A few days later, Theo Nalar surfaced at the port in Sereno. A day after that, he was inside the palace.”
“Why would he have waited so long to make his move against the royal family?” Levi said, talking more to himself than to the director.
“Make his move for what? Why did you have us looking into the Escobar family?”
Levi realized he had said more than he should have. Even though Cassie and her father wanted nothing more to do with him, Levi couldn’t bring himself to break the confidence. “Director, I’m going to have to call you back.”
“There’s something—”
Levi hung up and pocketed his phone. Whatever the director had to say would have to wait. For now, he had to find Theo.
He opened the door, and Darius was waiting in the hall.
“I’ve been instructed to escort you off the grounds,” Darius said.
“Where’s Theo?”
“That’s none of your concern.”
“The princess is in danger.” Levi’s frustration level hiked up another notch. “At least post a guard at her door until Theo is questioned.”
Though Darius didn’t respond, the flash of concern on the man’s face sent alarm bells off in Levi’s head. “Where is Princess Cassandra?”
“A car is waiting outside the front gate to take you to the airport.” Darius reached past him and picked up the two weapons cases. “Please collect the rest of your belongings.”
Levi looked down at the two suitcases. As soon as he left the guest suite, he would be escorted until he was off the grounds. He couldn’t leave now, not until Cassie knew of the danger.
His grip tightened on his cell phone. “I forgot my phone charger in the bedroom. I’ll be right back.”
Levi left the front door to the apartment open and retreated through the living area. As soon as he reached the bedroom, he closed and locked the door. He crossed the room, passed the phone charger that was indeed still plugged in beside the bed, and opened the door leading to the balcony.
He looked out and analyzed the guards’ movements below. Even if he could find a break in the coverage on this side of the palace, he had made sure no one could use Cassie’s balcony as a point of entry. Since his room was beside hers, he had inadvertently left himself without a means of escape.
“Levi, time to go.” Darius’s voice carried through his apartment.
If Darius was inside Levi’s quarters . . .
