GREG Well … you asked me to be truthful, so …
STEPH … yeah, but …
GREG Sorry.
STEPH No. Whatever. At least it was honest.
GREG Yeah.
GREG sighs and looks away. He shrugs. STEPH watches him.
STEPH … what does that mean? A “shrug?”
GREG It means I don’t know what the hell to do right now, Steph. It means Carly … well, not just her, but … Carly and I … we …/ She’s … shit … she’s pregnant.
STEPH What?/ … excuse me?
GREG … I’m … just … yeah. (Beat.) She is.
STEPH I hope to God you’re not trying to be at all funny right now …
GREG Are you laughing?
STEPH That’s … so … you got her pregnant?/ Is it … for sure?
GREG Yes./ I’m sorry, Steph. I’m just … really, really sorry.
STEPH Oh. God./ Shit./ Fuck.
GREG I know./ Yeah./ Kinda.
STEPH stares at GREG—it’s a mix of anger and pity and sadness. GREG stands there, shoulders hunched. His head bowed and his eyes closed.
STEPH can’t help herself. She goes to him and allows him to put his head on her shoulder.
The buzzer goes off again. STEPH takes a deep breath, then grabs GREG by the hand. Pulls him close and says:
STEPH … come on. Let’s go eat.
Neither one of them gets to their feet. They sit on the bench, huddled together. The pager continues to blink and buzz.
At work.
CARLY sitting at the table. Staring at GREG, who stands holding cups of coffee. A book under one arm. Silence.
CARLY … you should talk now.
GREG …
CARLY I mean, you’re here where you don’t work when I don’t need you to pick me up … so that’s, you know … probably not the best sign in the world.
GREG Ummm … I just … wanted to see you. (Pulls a bag out of his coat.) And look: brought you a cinnamon roll, too … so …
She motions for GREG to sit. He hesitates but then does.
CARLY Just say it. (Beat.) And to help you get going … I already know …/ Greg … come on …
GREG What?/ No, wait … what’re you …?
CARLY I know the truth. (Beat.) Even though we haven’t talked in, like, however long … Steph had the decency to call me.
GREG Steph called you? When?
CARLY Whenever. A few days ago./ A week, maybe.
GREG Wait …/ So, then … you’ve just been …
CARLY I was waiting for you! (Beat.) You told her about the baby, so it makes sense—I think she got scared and … anyway, she called and we met up. We talked it out.
She stops and waits, staring straight at GREG. He can’t take it for long and gets up, goes to the coffee area.
GREG Wow, that’s … you want milk?/ You sure?/ Lemme just …
CARLY No, Greg. Stop./ Stop it./ STOP! Sit.
He nods and returns to his seat. Quietly stirs his drink.
