- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
There was no audio, so it was impossible to know what they were saying. The only thing giving any information about the progression of the conversation was Seth’s changing facial expression, first wary, then a little confused. By the time Amelia stepped closer to him and leaned in for the kiss, the only emotions written all over his face were shock and disbelief.
Jasper tensed as the snippet that had been posted on The Chitter Chatter began, showing the two of them kiss. Only that this time it didn’t cut off right in the middle, but we could see Seth pushing Amelia away and taking a step back, wiping a hand over his mouth. A moment later, he bolted out of the room while Amelia fetched the camera and turned it off.
A choked noise from behind me made me spin around. Jasper looked like he had seen a ghost as he whispered, “Oh God. If I had known it was like this, I wouldn’t— fuck, I should have listened to him.”
“You couldn’t have known,” I gently said. “It looked real.”
“Yes, but I know him. I should’ve known that he wouldn’t do something like that.”
“It’s too late to undo it now,” I murmured. “Don’t beat yourself up about it.”
Jasper was still staring blankly into space, breathing heavily.
Then he suddenly marched towards her desk, but I immediately grabbed his arm.
“Let me destroy it,” he said, trying to shake me off. “Who knows what else she’s planning to film with this?”
“All our evidence that Amelia is The Watcher is on that camera,” I reminded him, adamantly holding onto his arm.
Subconsciously, I had gotten into fighting stance, slightly crouched with my feet planted firmly on the ground. “Besides, if you wreck it, she’ll know we were here right away. Maybe we can use this information against her.”
Jasper stared down at where my fingers were clutching his arm in surprise before finally taking a step away from the desk.
“You’re right. Sorry.”
I picked the camera up myself, finding the memory card and pocketing it. Then, I gently took him by the arm and said,
“Come on, let’s get out of here.”
He silently followed me outside.
“I’m going to hide this in my room,” I said, holding up the memory card. “Noelle should be back by now too. We can talk about everything together.”
Jasper nodded and together we made our way to my room.
Once there, I quickly fished my keys out of my backpack, but froze when I tried to turn them in the lock. The door was already unlocked.
With a strange feeling in the pit of my stomach, I pushed it open, only to see that the room was empty, Noelle nowhere to be seen.
“Elle?” I shouted, stepping through the threshold and looking around. “Are you here?”
I didn’t get a reply. Opening the door to the bathroom, I checked if she was in there, but the bathroom was just as deserted.
