- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I sat up a little at that. “Did Noelle tell you what Seth said about her?”
He shook his head.
“He seemed certain that she is The Watcher.”
“But that would mean that she . . .”
“Probably planted a camera somewhere before she kissed Seth,” I said.
Jasper gulped before he got to his feet. There was something jerky about his motions, devoid of any of the grace he usually moved with. “Only one way to find out.”
Gathering my things, I followed him. We quickly made our way to the girls’ wing, uncaring of the stares that a few of them shot Jasper’s way as I led him to Amelia’s room.
After taking a deep breath, I raised a hand and loudly knocked at the door a few times. Next to me, Jasper nervously fiddled with his lip piercing, both of us listening as steps sounded from inside the room.
I was expecting Amelia, only to be taken aback when a girl that was around three years younger than us opened the door.
Looking up at us with wide eyes, she asked, “Can I help you?”
“Uh . . . yes, actually,” Jasper said. “We are looking for Amelia.
Is she here?”
“Not right now. I think she’s in a meeting with the student council. I don’t know when she’ll be back.”
Jasper and I exchanged a quick glance.
“Do you mind if we come in and wait here for her?” I asked.
She looked uncertain, but eventually said, “Okay. I was just about to leave anyway. Just don’t touch anything, please.”
“Of course not,” Jasper assured her before she left.
My heart was beating in my throat as I stepped through the door. Everything was in order, just like every other time I had been here. With all her books neatly stacked on top of each other on her desk, her bed looking like a hotel employee had just made it, and not a single piece of clothing lying around, it almost gave the impression that no one was even actually living here, like this was a film set or a showroom at IKEA.
As there weren’t many things lying around anywhere, the camera on her desk was even more obvious.
Nudging Jasper with my elbow, I walked up to it. It was only a small device, nothing professional, and as I turned it on, there were only three files on it. Jasper’s breath hitched in his throat when he leaned over my shoulder and saw what I was looking at.
The first thing on the camera was a video. It began with a hand in front of the lens, making it impossible to see what was going on. When it lifted, the upper half of Amelia’s face came into the frame, her eyes staring at the camera for a moment, a furrow between her brows. She reached out once more and the camera shook a little as she adjusted it, then she stepped away.
The camera was now filming the center of the room, a frame that was all too familiar from the video that had been posted on The Chitter Chatter. Jasper inhaled sharply when only seconds later, Seth entered and Amelia stepped into the shot to greet him.
