  58. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

While the audience broke out in a mix of laughter and yel s, I could see him mouthing something along the lines of Sorry for swearing at Mrs. Whitworth. I was grinning so wide it hurt.

With my eyes fixed on his face, time seemed frozen for a few moments. I only got ripped out of my daze when Jasper’s eyes suddenly met mine with a questioning look. Too late I realized that he had continued talking, probably saying the play would begin now, which was my cue to turn all the stage lights on.

Cheeks flaming red, I rushed to light up the rest of the stage.

Jasper gave me a small smile and jumped off the stage to take his seat in the front row.

Even as Sammy appeared in his tower and the play began, I was still screaming on the inside. This was possibly the most embarrassing thing I had ever done, missing my cue because I had been too busy staring at Jasper. I was just glad that no one but him seemed to have noticed.

It was only after a few minutes that I got a little calmer and focused on the play unraveling before my eyes, relieved that everything else was going well so far. The sound was good, the actors were at their best tonight, the audience was responsive to all the little jokes, and I managed not to mess up again.

Soon the first scene, an introduction showing Rapunzel and his mother sitting together and talking in the tower, was over and the prince entered the stage. He witnessed the way the witch climbed up to Rapunzel and when she was gone, he did the same. In true fairy-tale fashion, they of course fell in love with each other right away.

After a bunch of queer jokes and them getting to know each other better, Rapunzel’s mother started to realize that something was going on and eventually caught the prince climbing the tower. However, instead of making the prince go blind and sending Rapunzel off to a place where he couldn’t be found like in the original fairy tale, she decided to go see the royal couple.

She told them about Rapunzel and their son. The king, wishing for a grandchild to take the throne in the future, wasn’t happy at all with the news. To convince the prince to stop seeing Rapunzel, he sent a young girl from the vil age to the tower at the time that the prince usually came to visit, making the prince believe that Rapunzel was in love with her and not him.

Heartbroken that the prince no longer came to see him, Rapunzel agreed when his mother asked him to move to the other side of the kingdom. In Rapunzel’s absence, the prince found out about the king’s ploy. When he arrived at the tower and Rapunzel didn’t react, he tried to climb the façade himself and fell.

After hearing about the prince’s near death, Rapunzel ran away from his mother to go see him and the two made up.
