‘What I don’t understand is why he’s doing this? First he’s having a go at the drugs side of the business, now he’s banging holes in the sex side.’

Sex. The euphemism that Joe’s family had always used for their prostitution operation. Even before it had got quite so industrially non-consensual. But then “sex” made it sound as if the girls had a choice.

‘I don’t know. I’d assumed that he was drugs focused for some reason, but it seems like…’

He thought for a moment, weighing up the safest way to put it. But Joe wasn’t interested in subtlety.

‘Like he’s got a hard-on for me? Yeah. Does, doesn’t it? But that ain’t what’s boiling my piss.’

Eddie nodded, knowing what was on his boss’s mind. ‘I know. Where’s he getting his information from?’

‘Just what I was wondering. Could be the filth, of course. They must know a lot of what we get up to, one way or another.’

‘Could be someone on the inside though.’

Joe’s gaze lifting from the coffee mug on his desk to Eddie. Then flitting across to rest on Richard. His stare sharp and hard. ‘Exactly. Someone who knew our cash collection routine. And where to ambush my boys.’

“My boys” when they were dead in defence of Joe’s cash; “your useless bastards” whenever he thought about that loss for too long.

‘Could be an insider. Could be the filth. Could even be the competition. Whoever it is, when we find them I’m having blood. All of it.’

Joe’s expression was merciless. Wordlessly setting an expectation.

‘So start yanking chains, Eddie. Start yanking them nice and hard. We heard anything back from Acid yet?’

‘He’s still waiting to hear back from this Steph.’

Joe nodded fractionally. Not satisfied, but knowing nothing the hacker could do would speed up any reply.

‘I want to know the minute he does. I reckon that’s the way we’ll catch this prick. And in the meantime…’

Eddie acknowledged the unspoken dismissal with a raised hand. And went to yank chains. Nice and hard. Leaving Joe and Richard to talk about Joe’s disappointment that the press weren’t off his back yet. Not a conversation he envied the lawyer.
