She looked at the screen. Seeing her own face, unmistakable in high definition. And listened to the accompanying voice-over.

‘…and then Bale told a government minister that he was a cunt and to fuck off. He’ll deny it, of course, but he has been sacked by the man in question. And there’s no smoke without fire, as the old saying goes. Quite shocking behaviour for a serving protection officer, and one that has to call his career into question. I’m not saying that he wasn’t provoked, of course, but we expect better of our—’

Mickey stopped the recording.

‘And for the avoidance of doubt, if I fall under a tube train later on this afternoon, that recording will be released to all UK news media. If Ms Egerton gets any – any – comeback from the Clarion, that recording will be released to all UK news media. Which, incidentally, will also wreck your friend Anthea’s career. And if I don’t receive a medical discharge on a pro-rata’d pension, in the grounds of enduring psychological and physical trauma? That recording will be released to all UK news media. I’ll take my chances in court if I have to, but you won’t be there to see it. You’ll be in free fall. Wondering where your career went. And why the ground’s coming up so fast.’

He shrugged at her.

‘Your choice. Your move.’

Mickey walked out of LX and into the early summer drizzle. Tamara was waiting for him, sheltering under a golf umbrella.

‘It worked then?’

Not an unreasonable guess. Given that he’d walked out of the front entrance.

‘Yeah. It worked just about as well as it could have. You shouldn’t get any come-back either.’

She smiled wanly. ‘I couldn’t give much of a toss if I do, to be honest. If that evil cow Anthea says anything to me on the subject I’m going to break her fucking nose. As will also be the case if she says “people go missing all the time” to me just one more time. Heartless bitch. I think I’d rather be back in the army.’

Mickey nodded sympathetically. Knowing the degree of disgust in which Tamara held her editor. Horrified at the lack of interest the Clarion had taken in the fruitless hunt for her colleague Mark, after a few days of high-profile concern.

‘You do know he’s dead, don’t you?’

She nodded. Unable to meet his eye.

‘And you’d like to blame me?’
