‘You didn’t offer us a share in whatever we find just to pull the trigger. You offered it because we’ve got the skills to get in there and shoot our way through to your target. That’s CQB, right? Close quarters battle. And it’s what we do. We’ve all done this a thousand times. Only for real half a dozen times, of course. But the other nine hundred and ninety-four times were just as stressful even if they were practice. Because we were shooting real bullets. At targets which we had to kill immediately we saw them. Fail to do that, people start looking at you funny. Like you’re not good enough. Worse, put a round into a friendly, even if it’s just a cardboard cut-out, and you start thinking you’re not good enough.’

Mickey nodded, rubbing a hand across his face. ‘All of which makes sense. But I have to go in with you. Because if there’s a chance for me to put a bullet in that bastard Castagna, I want to be the one to do it.’

‘Fair enough. Just don’t say I didn’t give you the chance to do the sensible thing.’

Mickey grimaced at that. ‘You sound like my wife. Probably ex-wife. And she’s usually right too.’

Shaw nodded, straight-faced.

‘Very well. In that case, here’s how we’re going to do it.’

Eddie took a look into the games room. Checking that Martin hadn’t managed to loosen his restraints.

‘Comfy, are you?’

The gun dealer shot him a dirty look. Not bothering to answer. Eddie, bored and in need of something to distract him from contemplation of the horror to come, strolled into the room. Better insulated than its predecessor in the warehouse. Completely soundproof. He pulled up a chair. Putting it within a couple of feet of the captive.

‘Pardon me for invading your social space. I just thought you might want to get used to the idea of it. Because when your mate Mickey surrenders himself, there’s going to be quite a lot of intrusion going on. And I can guarantee he’ll make you watch.’

Martin just stared at him. Probably uncertain as to whether any retort was even worth the effort. Eddie shook his head with apparent regret.
