"And he wasn't there."

David nodded. "Nobody knew where he was. That's when I figured out that he was the one you'd gone to meet. I got here as fast as I could."

That was it. There wasn't anything more to tell. David started the car, but before he drove away, he reached over and took her hand. "I should have talked to you before," he said. "If I'd told you what was on my mind, I might have saved you a lot of . . ." he sighed "... trouble is not the right word, but you know what I mean."

"Yes." Jenny held tight to his hand. "But I understand why you didn't. Don't start thinking What if.' I'm not going to. It's over. Let's just go on from here."

"Deal," he said. "On one condition" -- he leaned across and brushed some dust from her face, then kissed her softly on the forehead -- **We both said we didn't really know each other. Let's get to know each other better, okay?"

"Deal," Jenny said.

David put the car into gear and pulled away. As they drove, Jenny looked back toward the rimrocks. The sun had climbed higher; the rocks were losing their vivid rose color and fading back to sandy pink.

They still loomed, Jenny thought. But they hadn't been the cause of her nightmare. The nightmare was over, and she knew without a doubt that the rimrocks would never disturb her sleep again.
