"I did, too," Jenny told him. *When I finally realized somebody was trying to scare me, I suspected everyone, even Sally. Even you," she added, glancing at his forehead. "How could I not understand why you thought those things about me, David?" she said. "I didn't trust you, either. And it's true, we don't know each other."

"No. I guess not," he said. They were both quiet for a minute. Then David went on, "So, anyway, there I was, thinking rotten thoughts and feeling rotten for thinking them. Then when Diana woke up and told us about Dean, I felt even worse. I came over to your house to tell you about her, but mostly I just wanted to apologize and to talk."

"But I wasn't there," Jenny said. **Why did you come looking for me here? Why were you even worried?"

David leaned his head back and grinned. "I broke into your house."

"You what? You didn't."

"Right, I didn't. You forgot to lock the door," he said.

"And you just walked right in? Not that I'm complaining," Jenny said quickly, **but what made you do that?"

'^Because the place was lit up like the Fourth of July, and it sounded like a party was going on," he explained. "But I knew your parents were out of town, and nobody answered the door. So I decided to investigate."

"It's a good thing my dog wasn't there."

^Why, would it have bitten me?"

"No." Jenny giggled. "She probably would have fainted from fear. At least I know she's safe and well at the vet's." She suddenly thought of something. "You didn't go into my room, I hope. It's a mess. Don't tell me you went into my room."

"No, I didn't go into your room. What are you worrying about your room for?" He was laughing. "I went into your living room, so relax. It was very neat. I noticed there was a message on your machine and I thought maybe it would give me a hint about where you were."

"And it did, and you rushed over here," Jenny said. Then she thought of something else. *Wait a minute. You went to my house last night. You didn't get here until sunrise practically. I don't mean to sound picky, but..."

'What took me so long?" he finished. "I didn't know who'd called you. I thought you had a boyfriend."

"I just moved here, how could I have a boyfriend ah-eady?"

He looked at her, his eyes gleaming. "It's been known to happen."

"Yes. I guess it has." Jenny was suddenly very conscious of the way she must look. Her jeans were ripped, her ankle was the size of a small cantaloupe, every piece of exposed skin was scratched, and she didn't even want to think about her hair. She must be getting back to normal, she thought, if she was worrying about her hair.

David grinned at her again, as if he knew exactly what she was worrying about. "Anyway, I went home," he said. "Everybody was on the phone that night, talking about Diana and Dean. Brad called, Karen called; if Sally'd been here, she would have talked nonstop. I don't know why, but I decided to call Dean. I didn't know if he knew. That Diana had come out of the coma, I mean. I thought somebody ought to tell him and give him a chance to go to her. Apologize, maybe." He laughed softly, almost sadly.
