Jenny shot out her hand, grabbed a fistful of denim and pulled back with all her strength. Sally teetered at the edge for one more terrible second, then fell backward, her elbow jabbing Jenny painfully in the cheek as she landed half on top of her.
Sally rubbed her shoulder. Jenny rubbed her cheek. Both of them were gasping as if they'd been in a race.
**Thanks," Sally said after a moment.
**You're welcome." Jenny got to her feet and started stuffing things into the knapsack. She wanted to leave, fast.
Sally sat up, slowly. She looked shaken, but she tried for a joke. "Somebody ought to put some falling rocks signs around here."
Jenny didn't laugh. The rocks hadn't fallen, she knew that as surely as she knew her own name. When she'd looked back, before, she'd seen something besides a bunch of rocks tumbling down. She'd seen a shadow. A human shadow. The rocks hadn't fallen. They'd been pushed.
Chapter 9
Sally didn^t believe her, not at first. "It was a cloud," she said as they rode the horses away fix^m the rnnrocks. She gestured over her head; the wind was skittering several puffy clouds across the sky. "They make funny shadows on the ground, you know that."
"It wasn't a cloud," Jenny said. "I know what cloud shadows are like and this wasn't one of them. And don't try to tell me it was a bear."
Sally hooted. **We're not in the complete wilderness out here, no matter what some people think. Of course it wasn't some bear."
"Right. It was somebody." Jenny was too worried to feel relief that there were no bears around. "It was another prank, I'm sure of it."
"Come on! Pranks are harmless," Sally said. "Ugly, maybe, like that snake, but harmless."
"You're saying those rocks just fell by themselves?" Jenny asked. "Just kind of slipped over the edge without any help?"
*WeU, they had to have help," SaUy said. "But it didn't have to be human help." She pulled Emma up so Jenny could ride alongside. "It could have been geological. You know, something like an earthquake. A little one that nobody could feel. Or maybe there was a sonic boom that shook the rocks up. It could have been anything."
"I didn't hear any sonic boom," Jenny said. "And a 'little' earthquake wouldn't be enough to move that rock, Sally. And no matter what you say, not all pranks are harmless. What about all those deaths you read about from fraternity hazings?" She took a deep breath. "I saw a shadow -- a human shadow!"
"Okay, okay! Cahn down," Sally said. "Maybe you're right. Weird things do keep happening to you, so maybe somebody is behind it all."
"But who?!" Jenny cried. "Brad? Do you think Brad did it?"
"That's for you to find out, isn't it?"
It was a strange answer, Jenny thought. Either Sally didn't really believe her and was just humoring her, or else. . . . Jenny gave her a sidelong glance. Sally was looking ahead, smiling to herself. Did she know? Did Sally know who was behind it all?
