Slightly flustered, Jenny glanced away. The others had been talking quietly of Diana; no one seemed to have noticed Dean's little eyeplay, and she was glad. The timing just wasn't right for a come-on, and besides, she wasn't interested, even though he seemed nice enough.

She took another look at David. He was awfully

quiet. Of course, she didn't blame him for that. He was worried about Diana.

But if it was Diana he was thinking about, then why did he sit so still, his eyes never leaving Jenny's face, like a cat at a mousehole?

Chapter 5

Around four, everyone but Jenny started to leave. No one had felt like hanging around any longer; after a-few attempts at changing the subject, they always came back to Diana, and finally, there was nothing left to say. Diana was in a coma; they'd just have to wait and see what happened.

Jenny was going to leave, too, but then she changed her mind. She hadn't ordered anything before and there was nothing at home she wanted to eat, so she decided to get a hamburger. But she wanted to wait until everyone else had gone first. She felt slightly guilty that she had an appetite while the rest of them had barely touched their Cokes.

David left first, then the others got up and headed for the door. Jenny had just started to relax when Dean came back. Remembering his wink, she was afraid for a second that he'd decided to join her.

But he barely glanced at her. "I think I left my keys," he said, stooping to look under the table.

When he straightened up, he patted the pockets of his jeans. Jenny heard a jingUng sound.

"Sounds like keys to me," she said.

He pulled a handful of coins from his pocket and held them out for her to see. "Sounds like you heard wrong."

"Okay." Jenny shrugged and smiled. "I get the point."

*What point is that?"

*That I heard wrong on the rimrocks, too."

He raised his eyebrows. "What's your point? That you didn't hear wrong?"

Jenny just shook her head, shrugging again. "I wasn't making any point at all," she said.

"Neither was I." Dean put the change back in his pocket. "Except that sound can fool your mind. Make it play tricks on you, make you think you heard one thing when it was really something else." He reached into the other pocket and took out his car keys. Looking at them, he smiled slightly. "Guess I didn't leave them after all. Bye, Jenny."

Jenny shook her head again as she watched him go. What an oddball. Well, he was supposed to be a genius. Maybe that explained it.

She ordered a burger and had just doused it with ketchup and taken a huge bite when a shadow fell across the table. Her mouth full, she looked up into David's dark eyes.

She swallowed as quickly as possible and wiped her mouth. "Hi," she said. "I thought you'd gone."
