She put on a yellow top, then went downstairs and filled the dog dish so Peaches would have something to occupy at least three minutes of her time while she was alone. Peaches loved to ride in the car, her ears flapping in the breeze, and always put up a fuss when she got left behind, so Jenny hurried outside before the dog figured out what was happening.

As Jenny drove, she thought about the people who'd be there. Everyone, Sally had said, which would be nice, since she hadn't really gotten to know any of them. Of course, everyone included Diana, and Jenny hoped she'd be in a better mood this time. She wondered if Diana was as calculating as Sally seemed to think, or if Sally was just jealous. Probably a little of both. Maybe Sally's gossiping wasn't quite as harmless as it had seemed at first. Jenny decided she'd better not rely on anyone's opinion but her own.

The inside of the diner was as un-trendy as the rest of the town, but its red-leather booths looked comfortable and the smells coming from the kitchen made Jenny^s stomach rumble. She spotted her group at a couple of pushed-together tables near the back. David was already there, she saw. And Sally, and the computer guy, Dean. Plus another girl whose name she couldn't remember. Brad wasn't there yet. Neither was Diana, Jenny noticed with a slight sense of relief. "Jenny!" Sally saw her and waved her over. She pulled out an empty ch^ between her and David and patted it. "You're just in time."

Jenny smiled at everyone and sat down. "Just in time for what?"

The girl sitting next to Dean -- Karen, Jenny suddenly remembered -- rolled her eyes. "Sally's got us playing this ridiculous game," she said. " Whose Voice Am I?' We shut our eyes and some-

body talks in a different voice and the others try to guess who it is."

Jenny shot Sally a look, but Sally ignored it. "It's not ridiculous," Sally said. "It's fun. I'm learning a lot."

"About what?" David asked. He'd glanced at Jenny when she sat down, but he didn't seem overly thrilled to see her, she thought. They hadn't had a chance to talk yet, though. She wondered if they'd get one.

"About what lousy actors we all are," Sally said. She turned to Jenny. "We tried doing bored voices, and everybody was able to guess who was talking."

"Probably because we weren't acting," Karen said.

"Okay, then let's try a ... a nasty voice," Sally suggested. "You know, the kind you'd use to put somebody down with."

Next, Jenny knew, she'd ask for a shy-but-sexy voice. Karen was right -- this was ridiculous. If one of the boys here had made that call, he'd hardly give himself away so easily.

"I'm not sure I can do that at all, Sally," Dean said, and in spite of herself, Jenny listened carefully as he talked. "Putting someone down just doesn't come naturally to me." He said this with a straight face, but his light blue eyes sparkled just enough to show he was joking. "I yam what I yam," he said, and launched into a terrible rendition of Popeye's song.
