Was Sally over it? Jenny couldn't tell for sure, but she thought she'd pried enough. "Okay," she said. "Let's say for now that it's not David. Who else could it be? What's his name--the hulk--Brad? Or that guy you said was so smart?"
"Dean," SaUy said. "I don't know. He doesn't seem the type, either. It's possible that he thinks you're incredible, but he'd probably send you a computer printout about it if he did." She reached down and scratched Peaches, who'd followed them into the living room. "Maybe Brad. But he usually comes right out and tells people what he thinks--he's not the most subtle guy in the world. Diana can tell you that. Of course, Diana's no gem, either, I'm sure you know. If you're interested in David, you better

move fast, or she'll beat you to him."
"She's interested in him?" Jenny asked. She hadn't known that.
"She's interested in guys, period," Sally said. "For a while. And then she moves on." Her eyes darkened and her face lost its sunny look, as if the thought of Diana were like a cloud drifting across her mind. But it passed quickly. "Anyway, back to you and your mysterious caller."
Jenny was still wondering about Diana and David. Was he interested in Diana? "Forget it," she said to Sally. "I mean, probably nobody's crazy about me. This has to be a joke."
"Maybe," Sally said. "But it would have fooled me."
"Well, if he really is serious, then he'll call again," Jenny decided. "I guess I'll just have to wait and see."
^Tou can, but I won't." Sally drained her juice glass and headed back toward the kitchen. "Fm going to try to figure it out," she said over her shoulder. "And this afternoon's the perfect time to do it. Everybody'll be there."
"Be where?"
"Oh, right, we never did get that straight," Sally said, setting her glass in the sink. "The diner. We're all going to meet there around three for hamburgers, since the cookout was a washout. Well, I couldn't get a hold of Diana, but I'm sure she's heard about it by now. She shows up at everything, no matter how stupid she says it is. I couldn't believe
the way she talked to you. You must hate her. Anyway, can you come?"
"Sure." Jenny walked with her to the front door. "But you're not going to start quizzing people about the call, are you? I really don't want the whole world to know about it."
"I'm insulted," Sally said dramatically. "I may talk a lot, but I'm not a complete blabbermouth. Trust me, Jenny."
Later in the day, Jenny got ready to go into town. Leaving on her white cotton shorts, she changed into a royal blue tanktop. David liked blue, she remembered. She studied herself in the mirror, then pulled the top off and rummaged in the drawer for something else. Wearing blue wasn't going to make any difference. She'd apologize for yelling at him and see what happened. What should happen would be for him to apologize, too, to say that he shouldn't have dragged her up on the rimrocks. Then they'd go on from there. She hoped it turned out that way, but if they ever did have a relationship, it would have to be based on more than his favorite color.
