The water reached up to her knees. It was so cold it made her bones hurt, yet she began running again. She ran upstream with long steps, raising her knees high as if she was trying to escape the icy water under her. But it splashed everywhere and her clothes were soaked all the way to her waist.
She swept aside the branches that hung over the water, continuing on despite feeling like she couldn’t manage to run as quickly now.
She couldn’t feel her feet anymore.
In her next step, her foot landed wrong and she fell onto her stomach in the water. The water coursed over her, so cold that she thought her heart was going to stop.
Then she heard it. A branch snapped.
She stared into the darkness, listening again. Her fingers were becoming numb as she climbed onto the river’s edge, but there she found a heap of large rocks. Teeth chattering, she crept behind it.
She heard another branch snap, closer this time. He was coming after her, and he’d probably heard her splashing.
She pressed her back against the rocks, drew her knees up to her chin and wrapped her arms around her legs.
Tears pressed against the backs of her eyelids, but she forced them back.

Voice mail again.
This time, it was Mia’s voice encouraging him to leave a message.
Ola, on the other hand, had answered on the first ring, and Henrik Levin already heard him approaching in the corridor. He was practically running. Was he really that excited?
“Hit me,” he said, sitting immediately with his computer on his lap.
Henrik pointed to the table where the report lay open.
“Well, like I said, Robin Stenberg was a vegetarian, yet there was a package of ham in his refrigerator. Maybe not earth-shattering information, I know...”
“No, I’ve heard more exciting things in my life...”
“But he had supposedly been a vegetarian for many years, so unless he suddenly converted back to eating meat again, I think someone else was living in the apartment with him. And I want to find out who. Our knowledge of his private life is pretty poor, but you’ve gone through his computer, right?”
“Absolutely, and everything is documented. He had a number of accounts on social media. All of them are private, but on Twitter he gave the email address [email protected]. And he’s consistent online.”
“What do you mean?”
“He uses that email address prefix remarkably often as a username. He just really likes Eternal_sunshine.”
“Great. Search for everyone who has chatted with Eternal_sunshine.”
“I already have. I’ve gone through all the names, but the thing is, there are so many—like Ilovebeethoven, soonerorlater, cyberfrog, cheesecurl, moltas666, phantomsmurf...”
“You can’t get any regular names from these nicknames?”
