She quickly put the binders back on the bookshelf. She grabbed her bag, ran down the stairs to the kitchen window and stood there behind the curtain, peering outside.

She didn’t understand. She was particularly confused when she saw her father get out of the car. She didn’t know if it was the shock of seeing him, or the fact that she wasn’t prepared for him to be here right now. Her thoughts whirled around in her head, not least because of what she thought she had just learned from the binders on the bookshelf.

He disappeared around the house, toward the entrance.

She craned her neck but didn’t see him anymore.

What was he doing here?

She quickly left the kitchen, put on her shoes and grabbed her backpack. She heard steps outside the door and had no choice but to retreat into the house, crouching to avoid being seen, and creep toward the living room.

The fluorescent lights in the conference room awoke, blinking to life, when Gunnar Öhrn pushed the button.

The team had been called in and they gathered in the room, one after another. Five of twelve chairs around the oval table were now occupied by Gunnar, Henrik, Mia, Ola and Per. Only Anneli and Jana were missing.

Gunnar saw the light on in Anneli’s office and figured she was coming.

“And where is Jana? Anyone know?” he asked, looking first at Henrik, then at Per. Both shook their heads.

He felt a certain tiredness wash over him and was thankful he’d taken two 500 mg tablets of ibuprofen before he’d left the apartment. It usually helped for hangovers, but now it was helping him with the headache he’d gotten after the argument with Anneli last night. Not to mention the stress of finding out that the patrols had missed searching one part of the area in Kälebo overnight. But he found a little bit of malicious pleasure when he realized it was actually Anders Wester who had taken command of the operation in Kälebo. That damn blowhard could take his “cooperation” and shove it.

“This is an enlargement of the area from the missing list,” Ola said, nodding toward a picture he’d pulled up on the projection screen. He stood and pointed to the somewhat blurry photo.

“But we haven’t actually missed that much. There are only two addresses within this area, and so that you will understand where it is...”

He moved to the map on the wall.

“This is where the picture was taken,” he said, pointing to a place two inches from the X that showed where Pim had been found.

“She was found here, and the drowned girl was found here,” he continued, pointing to the map of the Arkösund archipelago.

“And what’s at these two addresses?” Gunnar asked.
