“We don’t know. All of her vitals are normal. She threw up once and said the pain in her belly subsided after that. But because she’s so close to her due date, we don’t want to take a chance and send her home just yet. But I think that you should go home and sleep for a few hours.”
“Can I go in and see her?”
“She’s sleeping.”
“Just to say good-night?”
A quick smile passed over the doctor’s face.
“Yes, go ahead,” she said.
Henrik got up, stifled a yawn and went in to see Emma, who was lying on her back. She was tucked into bed, her eyes closed, face pale. Her hair lay across her throat.
He took her hand, listening to her breathe, and naturally began breathing in the same rhythm. It was calming. He waited a moment, then kissed her hand and left the room.
Henrik raked his hand through his hair and stepped out of the elevator on the ground floor. The cold air hit him as he went toward the parking lot. He needed the air, the short walk.
The little parking lot for Labor & Delivery had filled up. He drove around the hospital building and waited for two delivery trucks before pulling out onto the road.
Just as he was about to shift into second gear, he saw something out of the corner of his eye. He turned his head and thought he saw a car parked behind one of the buildings on the hospital campus.
A black car. A BMW X6.
He only knew one person who had a car like that. Jana Berzelius.
He straightened up in the seat, looked at the car again and felt a strange feeling pass through his body. He couldn’t just drive away now.
He cast a glance in the rearview mirror, put his vehicle in Reverse, made a sharp U-turn and drove toward the building to get a better view of the car. But the road was a one-way street in the other direction, and he couldn’t break traffic laws. He drove around the building and braked quickly when he approached the spot where the BMW had been. He looked everywhere, but could see that the BMW was suddenly gone.
He rubbed his palms against his eyes and looked down the street.
It was empty.
“Pull yourself together,” he said to himself, convinced that fatigue had played a joke on him.
He knew that he should drive straight home and get into bed. That was the right thing to do. The only reasonable thing.
So he twisted the steering wheel and drove toward the exit.

Pim opened her eyes and looked out at the dark room. The sound of shuffling footsteps came from the hallway, but that couldn’t have been what woke her up.
She listened.
She heard the click as a door was pushed closed.
Beeping from a call button. Then everything was silent.
