Press Officer Sara Arvidsson leaned forward toward the microphone on the podium in front of her, and the murmuring in the room quickly died out.

“We’ve called you to this live-broadcast press conference because we are looking for a man named Danilo Nahuel Peña, whom we have reason to believe is a person of interest in the murder of twenty-year-old Robin Stenberg in Norrköping last Friday.”

Sara paged through some papers, cleared her throat and continued. “Danilo Peña appears in this photo. He has dark hair, is thirty years old and six feet tall. We believe he is traveling by car, probably a Volvo, with the license plate number GUV 174.”

“Is he the only suspect?” asked a man in the first row.

“It is too early to say anything about that, but because of the circumstances, we are eager to get in contact with him.”

“What is the connection between him and the victim?” called a red-haired woman from the back of the room.

“We cannot say anything more at this time,” Sara said.

“Do you have a motive? Do you know why Stenberg was murdered?”

“At this time, we are not free to discuss details about the ongoing investigation.”

“There was a death at the jail today—what’s being done about that?” asked a man with a mustache.

“What happened is incredibly tragic, of course, for the victim’s family as well as our staff. An investigation is in progress involving that murder as well, and as we speak an internal investigation is also being conducted.”

“But how could such a thing happen?”

“I’m not at liberty to say anything about that case. That is something the investigation will be looking into.”

“How did he die?”

“I’m not going to say anything more about the circumstances surrounding that case. The press conference we’ve called today is about Danilo Nahuel Peña, whom the police are searching for.”

The murmuring resumed, and Sara gestured for the reporters to be quiet.

“So this Danilo,” said the man with the mustache. “Was he related to Robin Stenberg?”

“We don’t believe so.”

“Does he have a criminal record?”

“No. But we are releasing his name and picture now because we believe that he may be dangerous to the general public.”

Per Åström examined the lunch menu at the restaurant Enoteket as he stood in line to order.

Three patrons in suits sat huddled together, eagerly discussing a data system that was to be delivered to a client in a week. Per couldn’t avoid hearing their conversation and hardly noticed that it was his turn to order.

“What would you like?” called the man behind the counter.

He ordered the fish special of the day to go, paid with his card, found a table near the register and sat down to wait for the food to be ready.
