“This other girl that Pim talked about, what are we doing to find her? Nothing! We’re just standing here twiddling our thumbs!”
“Gunnar,” Henrik said calmly. “We’re doing what we can. We have a hot name to work with...Danilo Peña.”
Gunnar wasn’t listening. He snorted.
“That girl might not even exist. I almost hope Pim was lying...”
“I believe she exists,” Henrik said. “And I believe that if we find Danilo, we’ll find her.”
“So why haven’t we found Danilo?” Gunnar asked.
“He doesn’t have a criminal record.”
“But he must have done something, or had something done to him. You don’t become a criminal and a drug dealer out of the blue, not of the magnitude all this suggests.”
“Maybe we need to start over, come up with new ideas...”
“Start over? We can’t start over. As you said, we have the name of a man who very well could be, one, Pim’s captor, two, Robin Stenberg’s murderer, and three, the spider whose web is the drug scene in Norrköping,” he said, holding up his fingers as he spoke. “Now isn’t the time to back off!”
Gunnar rubbed his hands over his face.
“And where is Jana for all of this?”
“I don’t know.”
“Well, shit.”
Gunnar sighed and relaxed his shoulders.
“I’m sorry, Henrik,” he said. “But why is this going so slowly?”
“Someone must have warned Danilo Peña that we were onto him,” Henrik said. “Because if he doesn’t live where he’s registered, where does he live?”
“Good question.”
Gunnar sighed and rocked slightly in his chair.
“You’re a good detective,” he said, adding, “unlike some others.”
“Is there anyone in particular you’re thinking of?”
“Mia, of course. I’m sorry, but she’s a threat to the team.”
Gunnar leaned forward over his desk and looked at Henrik with sad eyes.
“Anders has his eye on us, Henrik. I don’t want him to take over. You’re my team. That’s how I want it.”
“But he’s only here temporarily.”
“And has already ruined enough.”
“I don’t understand...”
“You don’t need to, either.”
Gunnar paused, wiping the sweat from his forehead with his palm and drying it on his pant leg before continuing.
“It feels like this organization is upside down. And it will be even worse when the new reorganization has taken effect.”
“Are you nervous?” Henrik asked.
“For the future, yes. Certain administrative positions don’t exist in the new authority.”
“So you don’t know what position you’ll have?”
“Or if I’ll have one at all. The planning committee has been very clear that everyone on the lower rungs of the organization will keep their ranks and salaries. None of them are at risk for becoming unemployed, so that’s some security in any case.”
“Sure.”
