He looked at his cell phone and began thinking about Jana Berzelius again. He was puzzled, unsure of how he should handle Ida Eklund’s revealing that she’d seen a well-dressed woman with a large BMW outside Robin Stenberg’s apartment the night of the murder. But why would Jana have been there? Jana, of all people!
The funny thing, or maybe not so funny, was that it was completely possible that the same well-dressed woman had been in the stairwell on Garvaregatan yesterday. There, the woman had more than proven that she knew how to use a knife—if the vagrants weren’t just hallucinating, that is.
He thought he’d have to blame hallucinations when he considered the possibility that the well-dressed woman was Jana. There had to be other well-dressed women in the Norrköping area who drove dark BMWs. Jana Berzelius must have a doppelgänger.
He tilted the computer screen a bit to the right and googled her name. Numerous articles popped up where she had spoken about court rulings.
“What are you doing?”
Henrik twirled around and saw Mia Bolander standing in the doorway with her jacket in her hand.
“Just checking a few things,” he said, attempting in vain to close Google.
“Why are you searching for Jana?”
When he met Mia’s gaze, he felt the uneasy feeling again creeping into his chest and knew that he couldn’t keep the truth from her any longer.
He sighed, as if to show her that he truly thought this was tough.
“I’ve received a difficult witness statement...”
“What is it?”
“It was when we spoke with Ida Eklund and you disappeared to take that call...”
He told Mia what had been bothering him, that there was a possibility that Jana had been on Spelmansgatan on the night of the murder, outside Robin’s apartment.
“Why didn’t you say something earlier?”
“I...”
The gnawing uneasiness was there again. He shuddered.
“Henrik,” Mia said calmly. “This all sounds totally ridiculous, but why haven’t you said anything?”
“I don’t know. You also think that it would be completely ridiculous if she’d been there...but I don’t know. I was waiting to confront her about it, but she seems to be avoiding us...”
“You have to tell the rest of the team,” Mia said.
“I know, but there’s one more thing...” Henrik looked at her, the worry plain on his face. “Ida’s description also matches the one that the vagrants on Garvaregatan gave of the knife-wielding woman, right? And Robin’s murderer used a knife with a surgeon’s precision, if I can describe it like that...”
Mia stared at him.
“Jana Berzelius?” she said, beginning to giggle. “Have you checked if she’s a former knife-thrower?”
“No, of course not.”
