“In here, I mean. Someone could be hiding in a closet. Or under the bed. A criminal lives here, don’t you remember?”

Anneli snorted and got up, walking past Anders as if he wasn’t there and putting the bags of money into her bag.

Then she went into Axel’s bedroom, searching through pants, T-shirts and button-downs. She pulled out his underwear drawer and sorted through every single item on the bed.

“Are you hoping to find another stash in here?” he asked.

He had followed her and was standing just a few yards from her as he looked her up and down.

She didn’t answer, turning back to her work.

“Oh, I’m just teasing you, Anneli. Sorry. You know that narcotics is my area. That’s why I’m here.”

He took a couple of long strides into the room and stood close behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and breathing in the scent of her hair. She tried to twist out of his grip, but he slid his hands up anyway and squeezed her breasts.

“This also used to be my area,” he whispered, letting her go.

She whirled around and met his intense gaze, but the words seemed to vanish from her throat. She turned back to the work of sorting underwear.

“You shouldn’t be here,” she said.

“Shouldn’t I?”

“No.”

“Tell me to leave, then.”

She didn’t answer, didn’t turn around, not wanting him to see her flushed cheeks.

Then she felt him near her again. He was panting more deeply. His hands found their way back to her breasts, down to her hips, pushing her thighs apart. She was just about to open her mouth to beg him to stop.

“Just be quiet,” he said, pulling her shirt over her head.

“So, we have a name to go on?” Gunnar Öhrn said, closing the door to the conference room.

Henrik Levin stood leaning against the table. Mia Bolander sat in her usual place.

“Yes,” Henrik said. “Actually, two names. First of all we have Danilo Peña, whom Axel Lundin named. We’re starting to look into who this Danilo is. I’ve got people working on it. Hopefully we’ll soon have a picture of him, too.”

“Good,” Gunnar said. “And the other name?”

“During the course of the investigation, we’ve come across the name ‘The Old Man’ a number of times.”

“Oh, right. What do we know about him?”

Henrik cleared his throat.

“Still nothing, actually. He’s like a ghost.”

“And this Danilo and The Old Man can’t be one and the same?” Gunnar asked.

“Might be,” Henrik said, “but I have a feeling they’re two different people.”

“There’s always someone behind the curtain, some mysterious type, but then it always turns out to be some everyday villain,” Mia said.
