“Instead you subject others to it,” Henrik said, “and make them addicted.”

“No, I don’t.”

“No? So what is it you are going to do with all of these balls of heroin, then?”

“I don’t know what you want, but you can’t prove anything.”

“I don’t think I need to prove anything, because you’re already up to your neck in it. You’re going to prison.”

“Says who?” Axel said.

“Yes, says who?” Peter Ramstedt echoed, raising his eyebrows.

“Say the men we found with you, Axel, at Garvaregatan.”

“They haven’t said anything,” he said curtly.

“They’ve spilled everything,” Henrik lied. “So, yes, you’re going to prison, and, as a police officer, you know the more you cooperate, the milder your sentence will be.”

Axel bit his lip repeatedly. Henrik continued, “I’ve seen a lot of different types of hiding places. Once, a man had hidden his things in a heating pipe that was covered in insulation. He’d poked out a little insulation around one coupling and created a little nook. We would never have found it if he hadn’t forgotten to sweep up the bits of insulation that fell on the floor. There were also a ton of fingerprints, exactly like there were on your hiding place.”

Axel Lundin wrapped his arms around his body. He had suddenly turned white as a sheet.

“We found a number of empty areas at Garvaregatan and when you were searched, you had multiple bags of heroin balls in your pockets. Why is that? Were you going somewhere?”

Axel didn’t answer.

“Did you get spooked when I called yesterday?”

Peter Ramstedt chuckled.

“Can’t you stick to relevant questions?”

“The question is relevant. I believe that your client became so frantic when I called him that he immediately rushed to his hiding place to clean out everything that was in there.”

Axel squirmed in his seat but remained silent. Henrik waited a moment before asking the next question.

“It also seems relevant to ask who is providing you with the drugs,” he then said.

“Why do you ask?”

“You’ve maybe heard about the woman we found on the train a few days ago?”

Axel looked stressed.

“I don’t know anything about what happened before that. I don’t want to know, either. The only thing I care about is that the stuff gets to me in time.”

“But you might care about it if I say that the woman died because of what she had in her stomach?”

“I know that she died, but I didn’t have anything to do with that. It’s none of my business.”

Axel stretched out his palms.

“Whose business is it, then?” Henrik said.

Axel squirmed in his seat again.
