‘I’m not criticizing, Will. It was awesome.’ She holds his face in her hands. ‘Always want more, that’s my trouble.’ She pecks him on the lips.
‘You ever had a feeling like something bad’s about to happen?’ Will asks.
April makes a show of pondering the question. ‘Only two or maybe three times a day. On the good days.’
Will laughs. ‘Yeah. Stupid question.’
‘Good job, you two,’ Ms Simon says, she and Mr Leavers inspecting the place, centimetres apart. ‘How much did you raise?’
‘We’ve not done the final count,’ April says. ‘Might be ten grand.’
Leavers whistles, impressed.
‘That’s fucking incredible,’ Will says.
‘Couldn’t have done it without you.’
‘Bullshit. You did this. You’re amazing.’
April checks no one’s earwigging their conversation. ‘What you doing tonight?’
Will grins. ‘I don’t know. What am I doing tonight?’
Her cheeks flush pink. ‘Bit cold for the Martello tower, innit?’
Will smirks. ‘Yeah. And that place plays havoc with my … performance.’
‘The altitude?’
‘Yup, the altitude. That’s it.’
April moves in close, laying her hand on the inside of Will’s thigh. ‘Come back to mine?’
Will nods.
‘Stay the night?’
He can feel her fingers through his jeans. ‘Yes, please.’
‘It’s gonna be just us tonight, yeah? No thinking about what’s gone before, about other people …’
‘Definitely.’ Will nods. ‘Just us.’
There are a series of taps on a distant window. Will scowls at the interruption.
‘Jolly good!’ April says. ‘Well, that’s sorted then.’
‘Can’t wait.’ A gulp catches Will mid-sentence.
The noise is a full-on hammering now, someone rapping on the window from outside with a hard object.
‘Somebody wants to get in,’ Leavers shouts, but makes no effort to investigate.
‘Gimme ten to sort a few bits here, yeah?’ April says.
Kris jogs towards the closed main doors. ‘I’ll check it out,’ he calls to April and Will.
Will looks deeply into April’s eyes. ‘Be quick.’
For a precious instant, their lips meet once more.
Kris is not yet outside when the pane is struck again, a rapid fire of hits, the last so hard it makes a dull crunch, the toughened glass shattering.
‘For God’s sake!’ Leavers shouts, hurrying after Kris to see what’s going on.
‘Shit, nearly forgot,’ April says to Will. ‘You left your phone by the decks. It kept ringing after you disappeared at the end of your set. Leavers got the hump and put it on silent.’
‘Fuck. Where is it?’
‘By the mixer. Where you left it.’
Will dashes to the stage, the sickness from earlier returning suddenly.
Twenty missed calls. Some Danny, some his mum. And one text, from two minutes ago.
RING NOW NAIN GONE CRAZY WANTS TO SPEAK YOU RIGHT NOW PLEASE RING
‘Fuck!’ Will says again, storming towards the door.
‘Will! Mate, stop!’ Kris is back inside and heading for him.
‘Not now,’ Will says.
‘Seriously, Will. Stop a minute.’
