- THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING
‘Just my darling brother. He can wait.’
‘Ah, yes. Danny. So …’
‘Is there something I should know?’ Will’s heartbeat quickens.
‘Had a chat with him this morning.’
‘Right.’ The gas from the champagne makes him feel bloated.
‘Hadn’t spoken to him in a while till today, actually.’
Will’s sure his relief is obvious.
‘I mean, his charming booty calls have continued unabated, of course. Almost nightly, in fact.’
‘Of course,’ Will echoes.
‘Together with the insults when I ignore him.’
‘Prick.’
‘Well, quite. But I have been ignoring him, Will. I’ve not been back there, since …’
‘None of my business.’
April eyes him suspiciously. ‘So it isn’t, Will Parks.’
Will notices his hands have begun to shake.
‘And today,’ April says, ‘I decided I was done with his shit. So I rang him.’
‘What for?’
‘I told him, Will, to leave me alone. That I’ve no wish to see or hear from him ever again.’
‘Why today? What changed?’
She takes a deep breath. ‘Because there’s someone else, Will.’
Will’s face is burning. ‘Oh, OK.’ He does his best to look unfussed, even though it feels like his internal organs have been steamrollered. ‘How did he take it?’
‘He wanted to know everything about this new guy, like he’d lost some sort of competition. Keeps asking, “Have you fucked him yet? How big’s his dick?”’
‘Have you?’ Will’s voice wobbles. ‘You know …?’
April grins. ‘I told him I haven’t yet. But that I think I’d like to. That maybe it’s gonna happen soon. Like, very soon.’
‘Cool.’
‘Yeah, he didn’t like it.’
Will stares at April. She’s perched on the edge of the DJ table. She’s kicked off her shoes, black tights covering her feet. Her hair’s all over the place. There’s an empty champagne bottle in her hand, her cheeks flushed from the booze. She’s the most perfect sight Will’s ever seen. ‘Who is it?’ he asks.
‘Fucking hell, Will! Keep up!’
‘How d’you mean?’
‘You, Will! Obviously, you, you total dick!’
‘Really?’
‘Sorry – assuming you’ll still have me.’
‘Fuck. Thought you were talking about someone else.’
‘I know. I was enjoying it.’
‘Bastard. That was awful. Like, an actual nightmare.’
‘Do you reckon we can just forget that night ever happened?’ April asks, putting her arms round him.
‘Definitely,’ Will says. He feels her hands on his hips, a touch that he’s yearned so hard for these past weeks that it’s caused physical pain. ‘Though maybe I don’t want to forget all of that night.’
‘True.’
‘I’m so …’ Will braces against the urge to cry.
‘I’ve missed this, Will. Us.’
‘Same,’ Will says, forcing the word out.
‘Think I’ve made sense of a few things.’
‘How d’you mean?’
