“They actually change location regularly. There’s a special online forum I follow for updates. This isn’t exactly legal use of city property, but the cops leave them mostly alone so long as they eat for free,” she says with a roll of her eyes, “and they don’t stay in the same place for more than a few nights at a time. It’s annoying but actually really cool following them all over the city.”
“Oh, the boys would like this, I think, but this is basically their bedtime,” I say, looking at my watch.
Jourdan squeezes my hand and smiles when I look her way. “Most of these trucks have legitimate stalls at the farmers’ market on the weekends.”
“Oh,” I breathe. “They’d like that. Do you… Maybe you…” I don’t know how to finish that sentence.
She nods. “Yeah, I would. When the time’s right.”
“Okay.”
“I have met one of your sons, though,” she reminds me.
“Oh, that’s right. Thanks, by the way, for helping Nate.”
She shrugs. “It’s the job, and he was adorable.”
“And for giving us a second chance.”
She shakes her head. “I told Darren he didn’t do anything wrong. Thank you two for giving me another chance.”
“Is that a joke?” I breathe.
She looks away. “Not at all.”
I stop walking and tug on our joined hands. “Hey,” I say, pulling her to me.
When we’re facing each other, it’s like we’re back in that back hallway, even though I know that we’re not. “We really like you,” I tell her.
“Darren told me,” she says, her eyes flitting to mine and skirting away as she speaks.
“But you didn’t believe him?”
“No, I believe him. I believe you. It’s just…”
“Just what?” I ask, focusing very hard on not crushing her hand in mine from fear.
Finally, Jourdan’s eyes meet mine. “I kind of hoped I wouldn’t like you when we met.”
My heart constricts, and I let go of her hand. Jourdan grabs both of my hands quickly.
“I didn’t expect to like Darren so much when I met him. I didn’t expect to meet your adorable son. And here you are, gorgeous and smart and sexy as fuck. I didn’t expect any of this.”
“What did you expect? Why were you on InfiniThree, then?”
She smiles again, but it doesn’t put me at ease. “You two are so adorably naïve. That name would suggest that everyone there was looking for real relationships, but a lot of them are just looking for people to fuck. It’s refreshing, actually, if you’re looking for that as well.”
“And you…were…looking for that? Just a couple to fuck?”
Jourdan shrugs. “I was looking for anything,” she says. “I was open, but I think it’s just hitting me that I was expecting something casual. Freaky, but casual.”
