“You can turn me in if you want. I can go to prison for the rest of my life. Just wait until I’ve taken care of the bastard, and then I’ll go along with whatever you want.”

Weiran hit “stop” on the elevator. He turned to face Xingyu, absolutely serious. “Are you planning on killing him?”

“Yes. And you can’t stop me.”

“I don’t want to stop you. I want to help.”

“I thought you were against killing.”

“I never set out to kill them because it was never my parents’ goal. They wanted them to rot in prison for the rest of their lives, so I wanted them to rot in prison for the rest of their lives. But after Bai Xue did that to Xiaokai, even just that first time…” He let his voice trail off and his fists clenched. “I want him dead. If he goes to prison, he’ll just get the chance to try to do the same thing to him. Hurting him once was too many. Twice? I’m going to kill him personally. Do you have any idea where he might be?”

Xingyu stabbed his finger into the button to get the elevator going again. “I’m not sure. But Ba—Liu Baiyan and Sun Yue both controlled a majority of the List’s dealings, and it’s clear that Bai Xue trusted them. There has to be a clue somewhere.”

“Maybe there will be a record of some kind of Liu Baiyan or Sun Yue visiting him.”

“Liu Baiyan rarely went to other peoples’ places. He didn’t like his safety being uncertain. But Sun Yue…it’s possible that she was meeting with him.”

The elevator stopped on their floor and the doors slid open. Weiran lowered his voice to a murmur, speaking right next to Xingyu’s ear. “Xiaokai did say that Bai Xue mentioned offhandedly that he was moving somewhere. Maybe there’s a record of that somewhere.”

Xingyu stopped, right in the pathway of a family with small children. Weiran apologized to them. “When did he tell you this?”

“Yesterday. Not long after he woke up. I may have taken advantage of the fact that he’s heavily medicated.”

“Did he say when Bai Xue said he was moving?”

“Before he hurt him the first time. I’m not sure how long before, but he’s definitely had enough time to finish moving since then. Maybe he moved out of the city?”

“No, if it was that long ago there’s no reason he needed to get out of the city. There were no indications that the List was about to be taken down. I’m thinking he’s still in the city and very likely is planning on either getting his major players out of trouble or planning on rebuilding the List.”

“Or he’s going to make an entirely new system.”
