Harlan folded his arms. “We had a lot of information, but the one piece of the puzzle we needed the most was missing. It just didn’t make sense that Olivia’s grandmother would leave so many clues but not the most important one. Turns out it was available all along. I finally realized it was in one of the paintings.”
“Which one?” Victor demanded.
“The one involving a mirror, of course,” Harlan said. “Olivia’s mother painted it. It’s hanging on the wall of their Fogg Lake home. It’s the only painting that includes the camera, a blue mirror and Olivia. The one picture where all the circles overlap. Where all the connections are visible. It’s the only painting that points to the future instead of the past.”
“It was a future that my mother hoped would never come about,” Olivia explained. “As I grew up and showed no signs of becoming an oracle, she concluded that maybe I would never have to locate Vortex. And then one day a man telling her he was from the Foundation found her and offered to take the burden of the camera off her hands. I think she gave him two of my grandmother’s paintings, too. She hoped she wouldn’t have to worry about them anymore. She thought she and her daughter would be safe.”
“I remember that picture of you in front of a mirror,” Catalina said. “I saw it every time I went over to your house. I always thought there was something weird about it.”
“You were right,” Olivia said.
Catalina looked at Harlan. “Where in that painting are the coordinates of the island?”
“In the picture, Olivia is standing in front of a mirror,” Harlan said. “The mirror reflects a small portion of the room behind her, including the camera and a large ceramic planter that sits on the floor beside a couch. The planter is painted with what looks like an abstract zigzag design. Lightning bolts. I asked Harmony to examine the planter. The coordinates were scratched on the bottom.”
“Mom bought the planter from a local potter in Fogg Lake,” Olivia said. “It was unpainted. She did the abstract decoration and evidently etched the coordinates on the bottom.”
Slater Arganbright got a thoughtful expression. “Your mother had the coordinates the night you and she escaped the fire that killed your grandmother.”
“Yes,” Olivia said. “My mother had the camera and the coordinates in case she needed them, but she knew everything about Vortex was dangerous. As the years went by she began to relax. I grew into my aura talent but I showed no indication that I had an affinity for crystals.”
“Crystals?” Victor asked.
