“Yes.” Her tone was very curt now. She did not meet his eyes.
“That makes it easy, then.”
She glanced at him, frowning. “Easy?”
“Sure. I’ll take one and you can take the other, no problem.” He paused a beat, pleased with his performance. “Unless you would prefer to use your old bedroom and you’d rather I didn’t use the other one. I’m good with the sofa.”
“No, no, that’s fine. You’re welcome to use my old room.” She unwrapped her arms. “I’m going to sleep in the car.”
“What? Why?”
“I haven’t been able to sleep in this house since my mother died,” Olivia said. She waved a hand in a helpless, despairing gesture. “I can’t explain it. I just know that I won’t be able to stay here tonight. Don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine in the car.”
“Okay, works for me. Can we grab a couple of pillows? And maybe some blankets?”
Tears glittered in her eyes. “Don’t be ridiculous. There’s absolutely no reason why you can’t sleep in the house. I don’t have an issue with that. You’re more than welcome to stay inside. It will be warmer and a lot more comfortable.”
“I’ll take the front seat. But first we eat.”
CHAPTER 34
I can’t believe you’re doing this.” Olivia pulled the down comforter up to her chin and contemplated the window in the roof of the SUV. “There’s no need to worry about me. I would have been fine out here on my own.”
“I know,” Harlan said.
He spoke from the passenger seat, which was reclined as far as possible. Unfortunately that meant he was trying to sleep at an angle. Like her, he was still fully clothed.
He had to be uncomfortable. His choice, she reminded herself.
“I should have asked Harmony if we could sleep in the library basement,” she said.
“This works for me,” Harlan said. “I’ve slept in much more uncomfortable places.”
“Such as?”
