“You’ve secured his wrists and his ankles, Harlan. He’s not going anywhere.”

Harlan hesitated and then, with a curt not, got out of the vehicle. He walked back to the other SUV, did a brief inspection and then raised a hand to signal that he would follow her into town.

She put the car in gear and started driving toward home and memories.

—

The last of the morning mist had retreated by the time the familiar roadside sign appeared.

Welcome to Fogg Lake.

Nothing to See Here.

CHAPTER 29

Olivia drove into town and stopped in front of the trailer that served as the Foundation’s office in Fogg Lake. Dexter Rose, the head of the on-site security team, came out to greet them. Olivia made the introductions and then watched, amused, as Rose and the others on the team studied Harlan with open curiosity and speculation.

“Lucas Pine called,” Dexter said. “Told us you two were on the way. Got a little worried when you didn’t show up late yesterday. Figured you had to spend the night on the road. Welcome to Fogg Lake, Mr. Rancourt.”

“Thanks,” Harlan said. “I need to call Vegas.”

“Your cell won’t work in these mountains,” Dexter said. He jerked a thumb at a trailer that sat near the general store. “We’ve got a landline in the office that you can use.”

Olivia stood next to her parked SUV and chatted with some of the people who had turned out to examine the new arrivals. With the exception of some of the Foundation staff, she knew everyone in the vicinity. She was well aware Harlan was the main attraction. Word had spread that Stenson Rancourt’s son had returned from the dead and was now working with the Foundation. The news that Harlan was chasing the Vortex rumors and that Olivia was helping him was a source of fascination.

“Before I make the call I need to know how soon you can arrange to transport a suspect to Seattle and get him on a Foundation plane to Vegas,” Harlan said.

“I can put a convoy together in a few minutes,” Dexter said. “It’s about a three-and-a-half-hour drive to the airport.”

“Sounds good,” Harlan said. “I’ll make sure Arganbright and Pine have the jet waiting on the ground in Seattle.”

Dexter’s brows rose but he did not question Harlan’s authority. “The kid doesn’t look like he’s in great shape. What happened to him?”

“We’re not sure,” Olivia said. “There some instability in his aura. I think he’s in a hypnotic trance. He was carrying medication. We gave it to him last night. It’s working, but I don’t know for how long. Do you have anyone on your staff who knows how to deal with a trance?”

“Not at the moment,” Dexter said. “He needs the doctors at Halcyon.”
