  61. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“She’s right,” Olivia said. “But I think we’ve got a chance if we pay attention. This maze feels like the caves in Fogg Lake. Every kid who grows up there knows that if you get lost your best bet is to find the strongest current and follow it. Cave divers use the same principle.”

“It’s up to you, then,” Gwendolyn said. “Eloisa and I don’t have any experience with caves.”

“Give me a minute,” Olivia said.

She heightened her senses, searching for a vibe that felt right. Before she could settle on one she heard the sharp, pure notes of a recorder. The music rolled through the maze, piercing the thick atmosphere, providing exactly the strong current they needed.

“Shit,” Gwendolyn whispered. “Be careful what you wish for. Spode is hunting us with his damned recorder.”

“No,” Olivia said. “There is no hypnotic effect in the music. No compulsion. Just a clear vibe. I think someone with the Foundation team is playing the recorder.”

“Who would be playing a recorder in the middle of a Foundation takedown?” Gwendolyn demanded.

Olivia smiled. “Someone who knows we’re trapped in here and is throwing us a lifeline. If we follow the music, we’ll find an exit.”

“And maybe walk straight into Spode’s hands,” Eloisa said.

“No,” Olivia said. “We’re going to assume the Foundation is in charge of this island now.”

Eloisa narrowed her eyes. “Why?”

“Two reasons. The first is that we don’t have much choice. The smoke is getting stronger, in case you haven’t noticed. The second is that Harlan is very good at what he does, and what he’s been doing since he found out I disappeared from Fogg Lake is searching for me.”

Gwendolyn’s eyes narrowed. “You sound certain of that.”

“Yes,” Olivia said, “I am. Very certain.”

“You’re right,” Eloisa said. “It’s not like we’ve got options. Let’s go.”

She started down the corridor formed by the towering green walls. Gwendolyn followed. Olivia fell into step behind the sisters. The prospect of dying in the maze had a remarkably fortifying effect; nevertheless, she was pulling on the last of her reserves. You couldn’t burn through both physical and paranormal energy resources without paying a price. She was going to crash soon. Just a matter of time. For now, though, she was on her feet and moving. She had to stay that way until she was out of the maze.

The recorder music brought them to yet another intersection. Eloisa turned a corner, took a few steps and stopped so quickly that Gwendolyn bumped into her.

“No,” Eloisa said. “The music is fainter in this corridor. We have to turn the other way.”

Gwendolyn swung around and hurriedly backtracked. This time she was in front. Eloisa followed her. The sisters rushed past Olivia and disappeared into another corridor.
