  60. AUTHOR’S NOTE
  61. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  62. What’s next onyour reading list?

“Meet my sister,” Gwendolyn said. “Eloisa. The reason we’ve been stuck here waiting for you is because my crazy client kidnapped us.”

“Spode is your client?” Olivia said.

“Showed up one day with the camera and a good story. Look, we don’t have time for a chat. If you think you can stop the meltdown, you’d better get to it. Spode is right about one thing—there is no telling what will happen if Vortex explodes.”

Olivia looked around and saw three branching tunnels. “Where is the machine?”

“Chamber at the end of that corridor.” Eloisa made a vague gesture with one hand. “Trust me, you can’t miss it.”

There was nothing else to do except make the trek along the corridor. Clutching the camera in both hands, Olivia went forward into the tiled hallway. The paranormal energy grew increasingly powerful with each step.

The currents howled, whined and shrieked from one end of the spectrum to the other. Auroras shimmered and flowed, ominous waves of light in colors that had no names. In spite of the effort of raw will required to make the journey, she knew that part of her was thrilled. So much power. It was intoxicating even as it threatened to destroy her.

“I’m from Fogg Lake,” she said to the storm. “Takes more than this to scare me.”

Halfway along the hall she realized the camera was glowing with its unique silver energy. She had activated it intuitively. Unable to think of anything else to do, she pulled up the holograms. The Speed Date Killer appeared first, lunging at her with his knife.

She heard a startled scream behind her.

“No,” Gwendolyn shouted. “Wait. Don’t kill her. She’s all we’ve got.”

“Nice to feel needed,” Olivia said.

She dismissed the Speed Date Killer. Spode popped up next. Hot excitement glittering in his eyes as he reached out to grab the camera.

“What the fuck?” Eloisa screamed.

Olivia dismissed the Spode hologram.

“What’s going on?” Gwendolyn said. Her voice echoed down the hallway. “It’s the energy. It’s driving us over the edge.”

Olivia pulled up the next image. The camouflaged vintage trailers appeared. She dumped it and went on to the image of the flooded cave. Useless. She ditched it.

Intuitively she knew she needed the last hologram, the one still locked inside the camera.

At the end of the hallway there was a chamber formed of thick, green-tinted glass. A paranormal hurricane raged inside. The energy was so hot, so brilliant, she could not look straight into it.

On a hunch, she raised the camera and peered through the crystal lens. It was as if she had put on a pair of sunglasses. Now she could see a crystal pyramid inside the chamber. It was large enough to accommodate a person. There was a door—a cobalt blue mirror.

“Oh, joy. My favorite color.”

Now what?
