“Sir, we are still investigating, but there is no indication that anyone on the Foundation staff or here in town assisted the kidnappers,” Dexter said. “It looks like they entered through the caves.”
“They knew how to navigate the Fogg Lake caves?”
“Evidently they were aware of a route through them that took them into town. Once inside the caves they were somehow able to use the energy in there and in the fog to amplify that damned recorder music to the point where it was powerful enough to put everyone in Fogg Lake into a deep sleep.”
“Everyone except Harmony and Olivia. The Piper knows what he’s doing. How did he and his men get into the tunnels?”
“We know they didn’t just drive into town,” Dexter said. “They must have accessed an entrance to the cave system that we haven’t discovered. Maybe the original one that was used when the Bluestone Project built the lab. We’ve known for quite a while there had to be a main entrance somewhere well outside of town, because the people who lived in Fogg Lake at the time had no knowledge of the lab. The construction crews and the staff did not come and go through the town. They used another entry point, but we haven’t located it. Figured it was buried in a rockfall when the explosion occurred.”
“The Piper knew about that entrance and managed to reopen it. He cut the library phone once he and his team were in town.”
Dexter grunted. “If the Piper was able to lead his people through the heavy energy inside those caves, he’s got some serious talent.”
“And a compass.” Harlan thought about the paranormal tracking device that had been used to follow Olivia’s vehicle into the mountains. “He’s got a direct connection to the history of Bluestone and to Vortex. No telling what he has in the way of artifacts. I’m going to end this call, Rose. I need to talk to Harmony.”
“She’s in the library. Said something earlier about expecting to hear from you. Let me know if there is anything else I can do. Everyone here in town wants to help.”
“Thanks.”
Harlan ended the call. He was about to contact Harmony, but he got a mental ping that made him pause. There was something he had missed.
He walked back into the motel room, shut the door and looked at his reflection in the grimy mirror. Everything was connected. No coincidences. He had so much information, but the most important piece of the puzzle was missing. Why?
All the data was locked in images—paintings and holograms. The location of the island had to be in one. If it was in one of the two paintings that had disappeared, he was screwed.
But there was still one picture available.
Only one image contained both the oracle and the camera.
