  90. THE BEGINNING

‘Perhaps I am somewhat more familiar with Abing, so I must ask, what kind of man is he? In all honesty, he is a quite exceptional person, as well as a freak. It is easy to see that he has certain talents, but he is also quite naïve, quite unaware of the larger world around him. I would say that his lack of common sense – his inability to function normally, you might say – shows itself most explicitly in terms of this naïveté. His understanding of the daily routines of life is rather simplistic, and yet those things he determines to be true and accurate must be so – they cannot change; he cannot be doubted. This shows that he has great confidence in his own point of view, in his ability to hear the world around him, but it also demonstrates his weakness – his inability to accept that at times he might be wrong. If such a situation were to occur, not only would we have to endure violent explosions, but there would also be no leeway to put forth opposing ideas. Concerning this point, Bureau Chief: you yourself experienced it first-hand earlier this afternoon, and I have had several days with him, so please understand my feelings on this subject. Abing’s weakness and his talent are inseparable: he is much like a sparkling crystal bowl that must be handled with extreme caution, since a single careless strike would shatter it. This is my first reservation.
