- THE BEGINNING
I left Unit 701 in the summer of 1983 and came here. Where is here? Well, it’s a sub-bureau of the cryptography division. Because this sub-bureau is important – increasingly important as it turns out – some say that we are the second Unit 701, no longer just a sub-bureau. Why did I transfer here? I had two reasons: one was work related, the other personal. My personal reason was that I had just got married and the sub-bureau was much, much closer to the city in which my wife lived than headquarters. As it turned out, I was one of the few people who volunteered to be transferred here; everyone else came pretty unwillingly. I remember that on the night before I left the valley compound, Chen Erhu gave me a commemorative notebook. He had written the following inscription on the flyleaf:
We both live amongst secrets, some of them we have to use all our efforts to crack, others we have to protect with the same vigour. Our job requires a large amount of luck. My heartfelt good wishes that you will succeed in all your endeavours!
