SHAY: good morning ♥ am I still your favorite enemy now that I’m your girlfriend?
ANA: definitely. you’re the best enemy I’ve ever had.
SHAY: do you normally make out with your enemies?
ANA: only when they’re as cute as you
Oh my god, I can’t handle this. I open my text thread with Lex and quickly send her a message.
SHAY: Lex she is so cool wtffffff.
LEX: plz don’t live text me your entire relationship lol
When I look back at our texts over the last twelve hours, I discover that, yes, I have been doing that. But who can blame me? I, Shayna Johnson, have a girlfriend. A hot, scarily competent girlfriend with perfect hair and killer dance skills.
My alarm clock goes off for the second time, and I’m slowly levitated out of my bed. The clock’s magic lifts me into the air, then deposits me softly on my feet next to my nightstand. I guess I should probably get ready for work. As I walk to the bathroom, I return to my text thread with Ana.
SHAY: what are you up to today?
ANA: I promised to take Lili, Xio, and Isabel to the mall
ANA: pray for me
SHAY: maybe Lili will give you a makeover
ANA: that’s what I’m scared of
There isn’t a time when both of us are free, so I don’t see Ana that weekend. I have to settle for texting all day and FaceTiming late at night. Whenever Lex notices that I’m trying to sneak onto my phone at work, she draws a little heart made of fire in midair with her index finger.
“Shay has a girlfriend,” she sings every time. And each time she does it, hearing the word girlfriend out loud sends a little rush of warmth through me.
On Monday, Ana shows up at the classroom where I’m finishing peer tutoring. She waves at me through the window, and I ditch the sophomore I’m working with so quickly that I don’t think they notice until I’m out of the room.
“Hi,” I say, beaming at her.
“Hey.” She leans over and kisses me quickly. I’m left with the sweet scent of her hair product in my nose and a growing sense of wonder. I get to just do this all the time now? Incredible.
She hands me a little iridescent box. “I saw this at the mall and thought of you.” The colors on the box shimmer for a few moments and then slowly shift until a green-and-pink logo appears. “It’s not a big thing, but I thought you might like it.”
