“It’s too short,” she said, putting her arms around my neck as I wrapped mine around her waist. “But it’ll do.”
We danced for a little over a minute before the music ended. When it did, instead of pulling away, Blake held me tighter.
“Blake?”
“Shut up.”
“The music though.”
“You need a hug,” she said, resting her head on my shoulder and refusing to let go for the two songs that followed.
A couple of hours later, Blake had found a bottle of vodka, and we sat on top of the kitchen counter, facing each other.
“Right,” she said. “Rules.”
“For what?” I laughed.
We were both extremely drunk.
“I ask a question; you have to answer,” she said.
“So, talking?”
“Wait,” she said, laughing. “If you don’t want to answer, you need to drink.”
“Got it.”
“You’ve played this before?”
“Everyone has. Yes.” I nodded.
“I’ll go first then.” She smiled, taking a sip.
“Adam is going to be so pissed.”
“Then he should’ve come with us instead of going to some gig at The-fucking-Den, shouldn’t he?” she said bitterly.
I couldn’t help but chuckle. “I love how you turn into a sailor when you’re drunk.”
“What the fuck does that mean?”
It only made me laugh more.
“All right,” she said, pulling her hair back and making a bun. “Are you having fun?”
“Yes, I am,” I said honestly.
“Your t-turn.” She hiccupped.
“Are you really mad at Adam?”
“Nah. But I’ll make him suffer for a bit. He’s really good at making up.”
I smirked.
“Should I be worried about you?” she went on, slurring her words a bit.
“Nope.” I shook my head.
“Are you sure?”
“I think follow up questions aren’t part of the game,” I said. “Why are you being so nice to me?”
“Because I think you and I are alike. Besides, you’re cute and probably the sweetest guy I know—don’t tell Adam,” she said, smiling. “And…we’re so alike.” She squinted as she leaned forward a little.
I broke out laughing again.
“Do you still love him?” she asked, trying to be quiet.
I grabbed the bottle and took a sip, holding on to it. “Can I ask you a real question?”
“Of course you can, Tommy.”
“Why don’t you ever show that you’re sad?”
Anyone else would’ve flinched or had some sort of defensive reaction to such a question. Not her though. Blake simply took a breath and spoke as honestly as she did with everything else.
“Habit,” she said.
I didn’t say anything. I was still not used to how open she was. No one in my life, and especially not me, was like that. Fearless would be the word to best describe her. Absolutely fearless.
