Frazer tore her attention from the back of Cora’s head. “About what?”

“You find out today: yay or nay to the project.”

“Ah, yeah. I’m trying not to think about it.” Or it had been driven from her mind.

“Well, now that you’ve got Cora on your side, I don’t see how it can’t be a yes.”

“Cora isn’t on my side.” The words left her mouth too quickly, too obviously.

“I meant you two are working on it together.” Tia shook her head at Frazer. “I thought you two were getting along now?”

Adamantly staring at the front and ignoring the tick in her eye, Frazer said, “Yeah. Having her on my side hopefully makes a difference.”

Thankfully, Alec entered, people straightening in their seats. Frazer sank into her own.

Tia practically vibrated next to her. “Oh! Here we go!”

He started with a slide on discharge numbers.

Tia snorted next to her. “Oh, he’s not gonna make you wait through all this, is he?”

His next slide slid over to a comparison of the numbers from the same time last year.

“Oh, dear God. He is.”

If it had been appropriate, Frazer would have groaned. For thirty minutes, they had statistics thrown at them, in more detail than anyone really cared about. Then a rundown on how each department could improve discharge numbers, patient turnover, and length of stay. Finally, the separate departments came up, and all of a sudden—

“Midwifery and Obstetrics project proposal has been accepted, they’re now merging with Social Work on it. Cora is to be the liaison for that.”

And then he was speaking about the new diabetes trial, and Frazer was grinning so hard, her cheeks hurt. Fingers wrapped around her bicep, and she nudged Tia, who made an “ee!” noise as quietly as she could.

Alec didn’t even make eye contact. Across the room, Cora turned around with a beam to match Frazer’s. For a moment, Frazer forgot everything and instead simply felt elated. If she wasn’t half-asleep, she’d probably have floated out the room.

Her project was happening.

When her gaze fell back on Alec, he caught Frazer’s eye. Her face froze.

I had sex with your wife.

“We did it!”

Frazer’s entire face was lit up, looking at Cora as if she hadn’t seen her naked, and that made Cora feel even worse. Maybe Frazer regretted it? Of course she did. Cora was married, and it had all been a ridiculous idea. Why had Cora had to kiss her?

“We did.” Cora said.

The water cooler in the staff room made a weird bubble noise between them, and Cora actually jumped. Suddenly, the look Frazer gave her bordered on pitying. Why couldn’t Cora just crawl into a hole? Why did she agree to therapy?

Why did she do most of the things she did?

“You okay?” Frazer asked.
