“Frazer! That’s awesome. You’ve been trying to get this going for ages.”
At times like this, Frazer remembered she actually enjoyed seeing her younger sister. “Yeah, we finally got funding.”
“God, that took ages. What stick lives up your boss’s ass? He doesn’t think helping pregnant people is important?”
The use of people gave Frazer a flash of pride. Only one quick explanation, and her sister had adopted it. Maybe she should stop avoiding Jemma so much.
“I think some of it was red tape. Some of it is indeed the stick up his ass the size of a flag pole.” There was a prick of guilt in her gut at the statement and Frazer took a large sip of water to try and drown it. It was normal to bag out your boss. It was something that generally came naturally. But that was before she’d slept with his wife and kept kissing her. Kept almost kissing her. Kept almost being kissed by her?
Whichever it was.
“Frazer? Hello?”
“Sorry.” Frazer put her glass down. “The stick must have shrunk a little, because by the end, I think he was actually interested in what I’m doing.”
“So he should be. It’s a great idea, and there need to be more programmes like this out there.”
Her little sister was awesome. “Thanks.”
“Now you just need to find a girlfriend.”
Never mind. Frazer hated her little sister. “Not you, too.”
“Yes, me too. Go on a date.” Jemma bit into her salad almost viciously, speaking while she chewed. Charming. “You need it.”
“I don’t need it! There’s nothing wrong with being single. I have my friends. And my fish. And yes, sadly, you. Besides, I went on a date.”
“Yeah, I remember. That receptionist.” Jemma stabbed some more salad. “And what was wrong with her?”
“She was…boring.”
“Boring?” Jemma eyed her. “Why?”
“I don’t know. Because she was. Now, leave me alone. I went on a damn date.” She also slept with her programme partner. Or friend. Or boss’s wife.
“You don’t give people a chance. Especially since your ex dumped you with zero warning and left you broken-hearted. And just broken.”
Sometimes Jemma hit too close to home.
“Hey, I’m giving you a chance right now to shut up.” Frazer grinned at her. “You going to take it?”
“When have I ever shut up when you asked me to?”
Frazer put her fork down and cocked her head as she stared at her sister. “How’s your lecturer?”
“Stop deflecting.”
“Stop avoiding.”
Jemma nodded and thrust her water glass at Frazer like she was making a toast. “Truce?”
“You have to talk about it eventually.”
“Do not. I like to ignore my problems.” Jemma jutted her chin out. “I learned it from you.”
“I don’t have any problems.”
“Sure, Sis.”
