- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
“I am going to protect her,” Raider countered, sucking down his sugary drink and trying to dispel his headache. Even so, it felt good to talk things out with somebody he trusted. “But she’s not my type, anyway.”
Wolfe chewed thoughtfully. “What’s your type?”
“Organized, mellow, kind.” Raider kept eating.
“Sounds boring.” Wolfe rolled his neck. “Though she shouldn’t have lied to us, right? I guess it’s up to you whether she’s worth the risk or not.”
He didn’t need more risk in his life. Raider looked at the clock. “I wish she’d call and tell us the information is good. We need to get out of here and find those girls.”
“Then take out the senator,” Wolfe muttered. “Did you read all of the copied journal?”
“Yep, and according to Force, there’s nothing about the guy on the tapes. We’ll need to dig deeper or trap him, somehow,” Raider said, his mind finally awakening. “For now, he and Eddie think I have some evidence on him, so that does give us an advantage.”
Wolfe crumpled his wrappers together just as Raider’s main phone rang.
“Hello.” Raider put the phone on speaker and set it beyond his burger.
“Hey. It’s Force with Brigid here.” The guy sounded exhausted.
Raider exchanged a look with Wolfe. “All right. Did I get the correct information?”
“Yes and no.” Her voice ran through him like a potent wine. Soft and sweet with a hint of Ireland. “You downloaded information about twenty-three shipments, and we have the origination points, train and cargo shipments. For twenty of them, we have destinations and even cargo hold numbers. It’s a great find. But I can’t identify what is in which shipments and there are three shipments with no destinations.”
Raider sighed. “Chances are, those are even more protected, which means they’re the humans and not the drugs.” Crap. “Suggestions?”
“Was there a main computer in the room? One that seemed to direct the entire business?” Brigid asked.
Raider scrubbed both hands down his face over his three-day shadow. “Yes. It was manned by a guy named Rex who seemed to be in charge of the entire outfit.”
“We need a download from his computer,” she murmured. “He must have files not on the main server, and those are the ones we need.”
Wolfe shook his head. “There’s no way they’ll let you get to that computer.”
Raider ran through possible scenarios. “Not willingly.”
Force cleared his throat, the sound tinny through the phone line. “Can you get into that room yourself? Say wait until after dark and break in?”
“Not a chance,” Raider said. “You wouldn’t believe the security in this place, and even if I could get past it, the entire building is wired. I’d rather not take that chance.” He stared at the phone. “Brigid? How long will those fake bank accounts keep Eddie’s guy occupied?”
