Judy      That’s nothing new. I was looking in the mirror just now and – it wasn’t me looking back. I had no idea who it was at all, at first … And then I realised – it was my mother. After all those years of trying to wipe her face from my memory – there she is. In every line and every crack. I knew she’d catch up with me some day.

Anthony      If only you saw what I see.

Judy      Which is?

He applies the eye shadow.

Anthony      You’re beautiful. To me and everyone that’s ever watched you. So remember that when you next look in the mirror … Open your eyes.

He moves out of the way, so that she can fully see her reflection.

… I think we’re making progress.

Judy      You do?

Anthony      Just wait till I’ve finished with you.

Judy      Oh – can we wait a little while? I don’t want to be ready yet. I like it when I’m not ready. When there’s still time to change my mind.

Anthony      I wish you didn’t get so nervous.

Judy      It’s not nerves, Anthony. It’s blind panic.

Anthony      It’s not like it’s the first time.

Judy      No. But that makes it harder. It was so much easier at the beginning. It’s a terrible thing to know what you’re capable of … And to never get there …

He takes hold of her hands.

Anthony      Even at your worst, you wipe the floor with everybody else.

She looks at her hand, noticing it is shaking with nerves.

Judy      … Oh God … I’m shaking.

Anthony      It’ll pass.

Judy      Anthony, I – the medley – I don’t know if – if I can remember the words … I just –

Anthony      It’s alright. You’ll be fine.

She looks like she is about to cry.

Don’t you dare ruin that make-up. I’ll never forgive you.

He gives her a tissue to wipe her eyes. Then he goes to apply lipstick. But she stops his hand by grabbing his wrist.

Judy      I’m frightened.

Anthony      We’re all frightened. We go through life like little children. Every single one of us pretending to be an adult … All you can really do – is find someone to be with who’s less scared than you are.

Judy      … Someone like Mickey.

Anthony      Well … someone … Lips.

He applies lipstick to her lips.

There – phase one completed.

He reaches forward and kisses her on the cheek. A moment. Then he kisses her on the lips. This kiss becomes prolonged, lasting longer than either of them expected. After it, they say nothing for a moment.

Judy      … You’ll need to hold my hand tonight.

Anthony      But how am I supposed to play the piano?

Judy      You know what I mean.
