He nods that he does.

Anthony      … Now is there anything else I can do for you?

Judy      How about a one-way ticket out of here?

Anthony      Apart from that.

Judy      Well … you could help me with my scarf …?

Anthony      … Certainly, Miss Garland.

He produces her scarf with a flourish and wraps it around her neck.

Judy      Thank you.

Anthony      No, no. Thank you

Judy      For what?

Anthony      … For saving my life …

Music begins. The band is revealed. A brief blackout while she puts on her jacket and takes up the microphone. Transition into a concert sequence –

Scene Two

SONG
‘WHEN YOU’RE SMILING’

Judy      sings the song initially deadpan, without any hint of a smile.

After singing part of the song, she realises she has got herself tangled in the microphone lead.

Judy (spoken)      This thing is attacking me, I feel like I’ve been lasoo’d.

She sings more of the song, then breaks from it –

(Spoken.) I’d like to take a moment to thank you all for coming here tonight … and for that matter, I’d like to thank myself for getting here tonight! I tell ya, I’ve been having a hell of a time.

She sings more of the song, relaxing now and breaking into a smile. But then she becomes suddenly frozen, as though momentarily lost. She looks at Anthony.

Anthony (whispered)      It’s you.

She forces herself back on track and concludes the song. Applause.

Judy      Thank you, Thank you. Let me just get this lead sorted out.

She fiddles with the lead again, then forgets what she was saying.

… Now what was I saying Anthony?

Anthony      You were thanking the audience.

Judy … I was? Well, there you go, folks. (She laughs.) … – Thank you. This is for you –

He plays a brief introduction to the song ‘Dancing in the Dark’ on the piano.

Judy      ‘Blue Skies’.

She gets ready to sing. He suddenly stops, playing nothing.

Judy      … Wait, I think someone shot the pianist.

She crosses to him at the piano.

Anthony (embarassed)      I don’t have that, we don’t have it.

Judy      ‘Blue Skies’.

Anthony      I … we don’t have it.

Judy      You lost it?

Anthony      No, I –

Judy      Well, we have to sing something, honey, or they’ll go and see The Mousetrap instead – and I wouldn’t wish that on anybody … So –?

Anthony      ‘Dancing in the Dark’.

Judy      We’ll give it a try.

He plays the intro to ‘Dancing in the Dark’, but she sings the opening lyrics of ‘Blue Skies’. When she realises, she stops and storms upstage.

Judy (spoken, irritated)      Wait a second, wait a second!

Anthony      I’m sorry, I –

Judy      What exactly is happening here? Either we’re under a blue sky or we’re in the dark, which is it?

Anthony      I thought we were doing ‘Dancing in the Dark’ –
