Markham interrupted, looking down at the stirring Grint, still on the ground and struggling to get up. ‘Let’s get this one back, shall we, and see if we can work out what’s going on. You’ll have to manage for yourself, Jane, while we drag the fallen tree here back to the pod.’

It took both Luke and Markham to lift the unfortunate Lt Grint. Jane staggered along behind on rubber legs and wondered what on earth had happened to her world.

Back at the pod, Major Ellis was lying half in, half out of the doorway. Max and Van Owen had found the medkit and were working frantically. Apart from Ellis, everyone seemed unharmed.

Markham and Luke dropped Grint with a crash and rolled him over.

‘Here,’ said Luke, pulling a couple of ties from Grint’s belt, and despite his mumbled protests, they zipped him and rolled him out of the way.

‘How’s Ellis?’ said Luke, anxiously. ‘Will he live? You have to save him.’

‘Dammit, man,’ growled Max. ‘I’m an historian not a doctor.’

Jane stood, wobbly-legged, her teeth chattering. What was happening? Peterson helped her sit down next to Matthew who appeared delighted to see her again. ‘Jane. Hi.’

Ellis was still conscious, faint but furious. ‘I do not believe it. What has the world got against me? That’s twice I’ve been shot in under a month. Parrish – check the pod for damage.’

‘No need,’ said Max, calmly. ‘The bullet’s still safely in your shoulder.’

‘That’s a relief,’ said Luke and received a life-ending look for his pains.

‘I don’t think you should take this too personally,’ said Peterson to Ellis. ‘We don’t yet know who they were aiming at. It might not have been you at all.’

‘How is that supposed to make me feel any better? Ow!’

‘Sorry,’ said Max.

‘All right,’ said Luke. ‘If it makes you feel better, they were aiming at you. The whole thing is one massive plot to obliterate you from the face of the earth.’

‘What are you doing?’ demanded Van Owen who was still rummaging through a medkit. Luke had previously marked her down as one of the more restrained members of St Mary’s, but her expression was in no way friendly. She ripped a package open with her teeth and passed Max a dressing.

‘I’m trying to make him feel better.’

‘Well, don’t. You’re not helping.’

Markham seated himself next to Jane and said quietly, ‘Can you tell me what you saw?’
