One stop at a shop that sold workout clothes and he was headed back to Millie.
She was still asleep in her white blouse with white flowers embroidered on the collar. Without thinking much about it, he stripped his dirty, wrinkled clothes off and pulled on a new pair of jeans and a black T-shirt. He’d also bought sweat pants to sleep in and a comfortable pair of shoes.
When he turned to check on her, she was watching him.
“What do you think of my new clothes? It was all I could find that wasn’t in school colors.”
“You look very presentable. Thanks for going with me this morning.” She noticed a late lunch waiting on her nightstand and picked up a chip.
“So, you owe me a favor, right?”
“Right, but I don’t want to play dominoes again. You can take them back to your dad’s place.”
“How about a date?” His tone was low, almost a challenge. “I have to go visit a friend, but about seven I’ll be back and we can have dinner and watch a movie.”
“I can’t go out.”
“A date right here. I’ll come in here and pick you up. Carry you to the couch. We’ll have popcorn for dinner. Turn the lights down and watch a movie.”
“All right. You’ve got a date. And now I think I’ll eat a little lunch and then take another nap.”
After she was settled, Hank moved to the computer set up in the kitchen to study all the info Colby sent over. Rambo thought he should sit in Hank’s lap and watch the screen.
After twenty minutes, the dog was still watching.
“When you figure this out, pup, let me know.”
Hank nodded at the dog and Rambo nodded back.
Just as he was about to shut down the computer, an email came through.
Captain, having trouble with your almost nephew, Simon. His mom left for a few weeks with work and Ray says the kid is not talking or listening until he sees you.
Hank emailed back: Why? He doesn’t even like me. Why would he want to see me?
Headquarters: That should give you a hint of what he thinks of us if he’s demanding to see you. His after-school babysitter quit and his grandmother, when she finally picked up her home phone, told me she was out of town.
Hank: Tell him I’ll talk to him tomorrow before school. Facetime. 7:15 A.M.
Headquarters: Will do.
