“I promised your brother, along with Murph, that we would look after you, and today, I thought I failed him. One of my guys picked up that little pompous rich asshole for dealing a couple days ago, and what do you think he did? He started spilling names like the credits rolling after a fucking movie. I bet you can guess whose name was the first on his lips.”
“Then book me,” I growl, stepping up to him.
“I can’t, Logan. Because the only person I have any proof on is her. You wanna tell me why the fuck I have this girl in custody right now? Because this is about to be a goddamn nightmare for me. You know that, right?”
“Then let her go.”
He runs his hands through his hair and turns away. If he thinks I’m getting on his nerves now, he has no idea how bad I can make things for him if he doesn’t help me fix this.
“It’s not that easy, Logan. God dammit! I asked you to stay out of trouble, but you didn’t, did you? You’ve been using, dealing, and bringing the trust fund girls into it. I’ll have the mayor on the line any minute chewing my ass out.”
“You told me to stay out of trouble? That’s really easy for you, Rafe, when you can just disappear after Theo died!” Rage and anger course through my veins. The guy I thought I could trust more than my own brother looks like a stranger to me now.
“How could I target anyone on Wickett if they knew our connection? The second you started selling, you fucked yourself, Logan. I’ve been trying to clean up this city since Theo died because I never wanted what happened to him to happen to anyone else. But you, you fucked everything.”
I don’t speak as his words run their course through my mind. The reason Rafe stopped coming around was because of me. Not exactly the news I want to process right now, but it’s definitely something I’ll have to come back to later.
He takes a deep breath and braces his hands on his desk. “You and I know exactly how this is going to go down. We watched those rich fucks do it all of our lives while the rest of us suffered the consequences. Her parents will make a call, drop some cash, maybe buy some updated parking meters for the north lot, and Sierra’s record will dissolve like someone just dropped it into the ocean.”
He lays a hand on my shoulder and gives me a tight squeeze. “You marching in here, making a scene and trying to solve this on your own will only cause more problems.”
Something in me crumbles. He’s right, and I could punch a hole straight through the station with all of my pent-up anger. It should be me saving her, making this right. I should be the knight that takes her away from this mess, but then I remember the way I treated her this morning. Kicking her while she was down just to keep her out of it.
