- About the Author
"You," he growls. I've never seen Ezra look so angry.
"Ezra, calm down," I say, stepping closer. He can't be that mad that I'm with Rafe. He knew I was spending time with him. He shouldn’t be so surprised.
"Calm down?!" he shrieks at me. "He's doing it all over again, Shelby. He's doing what he did ten years ago just to torment me! Or to get me out of the way so he can have you all to himself."
"What are you talking about?" I ask.
Rafe is standing quietly behind me, but by his posture, I can tell he's just as confused as me but as angry as my brother.
"He wants me to go back to prison, but this time he has to frame me for it!"
"You're not making any sense," I reply.
"They served a warrant at the shop today,” he snaps. “They ransacked my entire inventory, scared the shit out of my employees, and you know what they found?”
I glance back at Rafe who suddenly wears a blank expression. He knew about this warrant. It’s written all over his face.
Ezra pauses a moment staring at Rafe too, still seething with anger, his jaw clenched. "Nothing. They found nothing!"
"How is this my fault?" Rafe barks as he steps forward, chest puffed up. Quickly, I get between them and try to calm them down before they start fighting.
"Tell me you didn’t request that warrant." Ezra stands his ground, his fists clenched at his sides.
"I’m a cop. It’s my job," Rafe snaps back.
“You’re a shitty fucking cop!”
"Enough!" I shout between them. Before long our neighbors will be knocking on the doors or calling the police.
Ezra seems to relax a little and paces the room, but I'm still desperate to separate them before something tragic happens. Just when I think he's about to calm down, he steps back toward Rafe. "You and I have business to settle. And I think it’s time we settle it your way. Friday night at Vic's."
"No!" I shout, but he doesn't listen.
Instead, he continues. "If you win, I won't get in your way. If I win, you never see Shelby again."
"Ezra!" I scream, and I can't believe what I hear next.
"Fine," Rafe barks, and I spin on my heels to look at him, shock written all over my face. He did not just agree to fight for me. He wouldn't do that. Fight my own brother.
Nevermind the fact that Rafe is a shoe-in to win this fight and could probably seriously hurt Ezra, who is a big guy but has no fighting training except for maybe what he learned in prison, which can't be much.
As Rafe's eyes meet mine, he doesn't apologize. His stare is hard, like the man I reunited with a month ago, not the man who bared his soul to me today and last night.
A burning anger courses through me as I walk toward the door, opening it and staring at the two of them. "Both of you. Out!"
