I was fumbling with my keys in my front door, not remembering how I got home, wondering if I should call the police and tell them what I overheard. I was also thinking about how stupid I was for not hiding a recording device in my bra, when the lock clicked open and I stumbled through. But the door didn’t close. I turned to slam it but instead slammed into a wall of muscle.
I knew that smell.
Oh, shit.
“I’ve been calling you since you left the club,” Adam rumbled.
He had—my phone was ringing nonstop since I hit PCH and drove all the way over to Decker.
“I was annoyed you weren’t picking up. Then I was pissed when you were speeding over the canyon like a NASCAR driver. Then I was beyond pissed when you hit the freeway and continued to drive like a goddamned maniac. You could’ve killed yourself, Sloane, what the fuck?”
What the fuck?
What the fuck was—I wanted to get away from him.
I didn’t say that. I couldn’t.
“I wanted to get home. I’m tired. I’ll call you tomorrow.”
His eyes narrowed, he threw the door closed, and without taking his eyes off of me he locked it.
Fear trickled down my back.
“Seeing as I’m here now, calling you tomorrow is pointless.”
Okay. I could do this. I could talk to Adam and when he left, I’d call the police.
“Would you like something to drink?” I idiotically offered.
“What’s wrong?”
Everything! I screamed in my head.
Every. Thing. How had I been so dumb? How had I been so wrong about Adam? I kissed him and not because I wanted information but because I wanted to. I’d fallen for him from across the room with one look. And now my stupid heart was breaking even though I was thoroughly disgusted.
“Nothing’s wrong. I’m tired.”
“Tell me about Elise.”
Elise.
I dropped my purse and blinked.
I might’ve shaken my head, too, but since my head was fuzzy, I wasn’t a hundred percent sure.
“Sloane?”
I heard my name, but I was thinking about Adam saying Elise’s name. How did know her name? Not in all the months I’d worked at the club had one person uttered her name. No one knew she was my friend. How did he know?
Unless…
My arms came up. Adam’s eyes dropped to my outstretched hands, palms out, and he scowled.
Was I next?
“Get away from me.”
“Sloane, listen—”
I didn’t listen; I turned and ran. This was not smart. Adam caught up to me, twisted me around, and pinned me to the wall.
“Where is she? What’d you do to her?” I shouted.
“Come again?”
“I heard you, Adam!”
I saw the familiar flinch, and seeing that pissed me off.
“God. I should’ve known.”
“Known what?”
“I knew there was something wrong with you. What, am I next? Of course. I’m next. I heard you and Lorenzo talking about you wanting your fresh girl.”
