Wilson’s jaw clenched and it didn’t relax when he said, “You need to get her to talk. However that comes about. Rhode’s trying to find out who the roommate is. If he runs into any problems, he’ll call in Shep. But getting ahold of Shep is a pain in the ass and could take a few days. If that happens, I’ll sit on Sloane’s apartment, get a shot of the roommate, and run it through facial rec. Cole’s gonna continue digging into her parents. When he’s done with that, he can help Rhode. I have a call into Lorenzo’s office asking for a sit-down. If that doesn’t get me a face-to-face, we’ll send him an invite to this meet-and-greet you’re having Sloane plan. Which by the way was a good save but I hope you have the guest list handy or your great idea’s gonna blow up in your face.”
Pillow talk.
My stomach revolted at the idea.
“We might have to have the rest of the team fly down,” I admitted.
“That’s a fuck no,” Wilson returned. “If Rhode and Reese come down here Brooklyn and Sadie will want to come. And where Brooklyn goes Letty goes. And that, my friend, is where your plan will blow up. Those two will scare the fuck out of Sloane.”
Actually, I thought Sloane would get along well with Brooklyn, Letty, and Sadie. If anyone could get her to talk it would be Letty. The woman was pathologically friendly—she was also pushy and nosy.
“Maybe—”
“Fuck no,” Wilson cut me off and repeated. “Trust me on this. You want something to come out of this beyond closing a case. You get Sloane to talk.”
“Beyond closing a case?”
Wilson practically rolled his eyes before they swung to Cole.
“You know what they say, boss,” Cole started. “The course of true love never did run smooth.”
“Plato’s—”
“Shakespeare,” Cole corrected.
“I don’t give a shit who said it,” Wilson interrupted. “But damn if it isn’t true. And if you were trying to hide whatever it is you got going on for Sloane, hate to tell you but you failed. So I’ll repeat—get her to talk. The sooner she does, we can clear her, and you’ll have a clean go of it.”
“What he means is, you can get on your knees and beg her to forgive you for lying to her about who you are and what you do, Adam.”
Fuck.
“It’s not like…” I trailed off, unable to finish the lie.
It was just like that.
The problem was I wasn’t exactly sure what that was.
Plus, Cole was right, I’d been lying to Sloane since the day I met her. Then there was the added complication that she lived in California and I lived in Idaho.
I decided it would be best to dodge the topic altogether and employ evasive maneuvers.
“I have to get ready.”
“Get her to talk,” Wilson repeated as I walked away.
