“Do the police have any other suspects?” she asked.
“Not yet.”
She swallowed audibly. “That doesn’t sound good. Why can’t I remember any of this?”
“I don’t know, but I suspect some sort of sedative.”
Eban checked the satnav. No one was following them right now and he needed some supplies of his own.
“What do you think is going on?” she asked Byrne.
There was a long pause where the only sound was that of the heater blowing and winter tires racing over frozen roads.
Byrne spoke again, slowly. “As smart as you undoubtedly are, I don’t think you set this up. I do think someone tried to frame you but messed up that one critical detail. Did they plan to set you up from the start or simply take advantage of the fact you were there when they killed Martin? I don’t know, but I am getting those trace evidence and toxicology tests expedited. Many have already been sent to the State lab at the Feds’ insistence. Any reason why the FBI is so interested in you?”
She sent Eban a look.
“No.” Her voice squeaked. He grinned. She was a terrible liar. “You think someone drugged me at the ceilidh?”
“I think it’s a distinct possibility. I intend to get access to the images to see if there is any evidence we can use to shore up your defense.”
Darby stared out at the lights along the highway looking vulnerable and confused. “Why would someone do that to me, or Martin?”
“I don’t know, which is why we need to talk,” the lawyer admitted. “The fact the FBI is involved suggests this might be bigger than we realize.”
Eban stopped her correcting the other man with a shake of his head.
“You’re sure this person you’re staying with is trustworthy? Not someone who was in a position to hurt Martin yesterday?”
Her gaze collided with his. “I’m absolutely sure.”
“Okay, then.” Byrne’s voice softened. “Meet me at this hotel tomorrow morning at nine. Room 405. We’ll have breakfast together and go over the next steps.”
Eban gave her a nod, not that she needed his permission. At least, not technically. However, it would be a long time until he willingly let her out of his sight again.
“I’ll be there.”
“Did the cops tell you not to leave town?” Byrne asked.
“Yes, they did. And they still have my truck and other stuff from my apartment apparently.”
“The cops don’t want to let go of their primary suspect even though it’s obvious you’re being setup.” Byrne made a noise of frustration. “I’ll get an itemized list of everything they took and light a fire under them to release your vehicle and other belongings that are not being held as evidence from the crime scene itself.”
“Thank you.”
“Darby…” The lawyer’s voice changed. Deepened. If Eban wasn’t mistaken the guy was exhibiting genuine emotion.
“Yes?”
“After what you told me today,” the man gave a little cough, “well, let’s just say I understand now why Haley is so protective of you.”
