He looked up and blinked. “Of course not. My clients generally aren’t violent.”
“Well, someone did in fact murder both Martin and Adele and possibly broke in here.”
He straightened. “You think this break-in might be related to the murders?” He frowned “Do you think Darby could have—”
“Miss O’Roarke is not a suspect in the second murder. I won’t know about the break-in until we can more accurately pin down a time for it.”
Signy wasn’t willing to completely let Darby off the hook. Not yet. Maybe Adele was a copycat murder? Maybe Darby was in cahoots with someone else. The FBI agent didn’t think so, but the FBI had been known to occasionally get it wrong in the past.
Lines formed on Gleeson’s forehead. “How can you be so sure? Not that I think Darby is capable of—”
“She has a solid alibi for when Adele Surrey was murdered.”
He raised his chin with a considering expression on his face. “Ah. The FBI agent.”
Signy smiled. “Yes, having a Federal Agent swear you were with them when a murder occurred is pretty much the gold standard of alibis.”
“Good.” He nodded although still looked confused. “She never mentioned him to me, but they must be friends…” He laughed self-consciously. “I don’t know why I wanted to so quickly place the blame on her—except I do. Even highly educated humans like myself tend to imprint on the first name or face we’re given and she was found at Carstairs’s house. If Darby is innocent, and I strongly suspect she is, her life in this town is going to be rough from now on.” His gaze narrowed and his mouth tightened.
Signy shifted her feet, feeling a little guilt leech through her defenses, but this was her job. And if there was a niggle that she hadn’t initially tried quite as hard as she should have in Martin’s case? She banished it. Being a cop was always easy from the outside but try actually doing it and see how fast situations turned on their heads. She finished her drink and washed her mug under the hot faucet.
“These guys will be finished up in the next hour.” The lab now had more evidence to process than they usually collected in a month. “If you wouldn’t mind looking through your files as soon as you are able and let me know if any of them are missing.”
She handed him her business card and he stood there staring at it.
“Which do you want first? The list of students, group therapy attendees or letting you know about any missing files?” There was a bite to his tone now.
She blinked and cocked her head. “The group therapy I think, in case officers don’t turn up the camera in the course of their inquiries. Names, addresses and phone numbers would be great. I promise we will assure them you haven’t revealed anything confidential.”
“Good. I’ll email them to reassure them of the fact also.” He grabbed his coat. “In that case I need to go home and put this information together. Thank you for all your help with the burglary, Detective.”
