“I suppose that means you’re familiar with hunting knives?” The detective looked like she’d scored a point.
Darby shut up. If the detective wanted to unnerve Darby, she’d succeeded. It was so easy to be tripped up during questioning. Eban’s and Quentin’s advice was starting to make a lot more sense.
“I’d like copies of all the toxicology reports and tests on the blood stains, especially if it proves to be human,” Elliot interjected.
Detective Torgerson smiled blandly. “Of course. What happened next?”
“I ran. Grabbed my coat and boots and jumped in my truck.”
“Then she called the police,” Elliot said loudly for the recorder.
Detective Torgerson once again looked irritated. For some reason she didn’t seem to like Darby or her lawyer. “Did you have sex with Martin Carstairs last night?”
Darby shook her head.
“Out loud please, for the recorders,” Torgerson snapped.
“No. I don’t think so.” Not with consent, anyway.
“Have you ever had sex?”
Darby looked at Elliot.
“Not relevant to this investigation,” he grated.
“I think your client’s former behavior during sex is highly relevant to this investigation.”
Cold sweat slid down Darby’s spine. What had Eban told the woman?
“Except my client doesn’t believe she had sex with the victim.”
“I thought she couldn’t remember,” Torgerson said sarcastically. “I’d like a list of former sexual partners.”
Elliot leaned back in his seat looking deceptively relaxed. “That isn’t happening. It’s a flagrant violation of my client’s personal privacy.”
“Maybe they’ll come forward on their own,” the detective suggested with a nasty glint in her eye.
The men who raped her were all dead. The thought echoed hysterically around Darby’s mind. She didn’t think it would help her case to inform the detective of that fact.
The detective’s gaze locked onto hers. “I’d like to talk to you about your abduction last summer.”
Everything inside Darby froze and then crystallized into terror, but damn if she was being grilled about her abduction by this adversarial police officer.
“No comment.” The words were easier now.
The detective shrugged. “The FBI are making all their case files available to us regarding your alleged kidnapping last summer.”
Alleged? The steady pressure of Elliot’s foot on top of hers was almost painful. Panic wanted to rise up inside her, but his steady presence at her side grounded her, along with the knowledge the “FBI” wouldn’t do that to her and certainly wouldn’t label her ordeal as “alleged.”
This was a power play by the detective and she had overplayed her hand.
Torgerson waited.
Darby said nothing.
Elliot smiled. “No comment.”
Torgerson’s expression tightened, then her phone buzzed and she rose to her feet. “Excuse me a moment, I need to take this. Detective Torgerson is stepping out of the interview room at 7:16 PM.” She turned off the recorder.
“You’re doing great, Darby. Keep it up.” Elliot smiled at her.
Before she had time to relax the woman was back with a gleam in her eye. She started the interview recording equipment again.
